Great Blue Heron Hiding In the Mangroves ©Debra Martz
Perhaps it thought it was in hiding, but they are so large that it is rather difficult to go unseen. Captured from a boardwalk over some wetlands on South Padre Island, Texas.

A great blue heron peers out from behind a cluster of green leaves, its sharp beak and intense gaze suggesting it is on the lookout for its next meal. The intricate pattern of its feathers can be partially seen, while the surrounding mangroves provide a natural camouflage. Photography by Debra Martz

Meet the Common Pheasant: Nature's Flashiest Ground Bird!

With its shimmering copper, emerald, and gold feathers, the male Common Pheasant is a true showstopper. Originally from Asia, these birds have made themselves at home across Europe, including the Netherlands. You'll often spot them in farmlands, grasslands, and woodland edges.

Despite their ability to fly short distances, pheasants prefer to run, using their strong legs to dash through underbrush. Their diet is diverse—seeds, berries, insects, and even small reptiles are on the menu.

During spring, males gather harems of females, who nest on the ground and lay up to a dozen eggs. Chicks grow rapidly, taking their first flight within two weeks!

Keep an eye (and ear) out for their distinctive crowing and sudden bursts into flight. The Common Pheasant is a vibrant reminder of nature's adaptability and splendor. All About Birds

"Curious Winter Wren" by Debra Martz
Like any Wren I’ve ever watched, this one was curious, too. It was under rocks, between rocks, in the vegetation, hopping in the water puddle, and exploring every knook and cranny in the area. Finally, it briefly stopped!

Note: Not to mention, this was a Lifer, which made my day of birdwatching complete!

Kinglet Here One Second Gone The Next by Debra Martz
Ruby-crowned Kinglet is so named for the color of the crown, though it is usually concealed and only present on males. They are hyperactive, energetic, quick-moving, wing-flicking little songbirds and foragers in wooded habitats. Seen in S. Texas
