A small square dish filled with mealworms is crowded with 6 bluebirds. Normally, during breeding season, they are quite territorial but in the winter, with food scarce, they turn into socialists. It looks like there is one male and 5 females.

A male flicker (a medium sized woodpecker) is feeding from a suet feeder in a snow shower. He has pecked off a big chunk of suet and is trying to swallow it, but since the piece of suet is considerably bigger than his beak, that's not happening.

A female house finch stops for a water break at the birdbath. She is a small bird, brown and white all over.

A female bluebird waits for her turn at the mealworm feeder. She is a small bird with a gray-blue head, back and wings. Her wings are edged in blue, as is her tail.

A male American goldfinch basks in the sun. He is in his winter feathers, with a dull yellow body, a brighter yellow head and black and white wings.

A male hairy woodpecker pecks out a suet nugget from the feeder. It is snowing and he is puffed up against the cold. He's got a black back, his wings are black and white, as is his head and his chest and belly are white. He's got a red dot at the back of his head, indicating that he is a male.

A tiny but energetic Carolina wren picks up a dried mealworm from the feeder. This bird is the loudest for its size in the forest. It has the shape of a ping pong ball, with cinnamon colored wings with faint bars and a lighter colored chest and belly. On its head, it has a white eyebrow.

The dark eyed junco is a small, slate grey bird with darker wings and a pink bill. It has a dark eye.

The small downy woodpeckers, with their black and white wings and tail , black and white heads and white throat, chest and belly are with us all year. This is a female, as she has no red color on the back of her head.

The bluebirds have returned in force. This one is a female with gray feather and hints of blue along the wings, with a cinnamon chest and white belly. They are a lot of fun to watch.

I decided to redo week 47 Nature. Looking back through my pictures I realized I hadn't done any bird photography lately, and with the full feeders I had plenty of subjects to choose from. The light just hasn't been great. Today I finally caught this portrait of a female Cardinal looking my way.
