#WorldOfOntyre 06

Looking back at December, while I know I drafted a novel, it’s all a bit of a blur. Seriously.

I was so sick with Covid, that I recall planning the story—and suddenly it was over and I was starting the edit on Book-5, which I’m close to finishing.

Yikes. It’s possible that the scariest thing I’ve ever written is waiting for me to read it (for all the wrong reasons).

Be everwell.

PANNULUS MAP
A color map of the archipelago Republic of Pannulus, which is located off the northeast coast of the Continent of Tremjara. The roughly circular island group is surrounded by the Veiled Sea to the west, Greenwall Strait to the northwest, Oln Strait to the southwest, and the Titania Ocean elsewhere.

Of the over twenty islands, the primary island, Sancthor, is larger than the others combined at about sixty percent. Centered in the group, and shaped like an arrowhead, it points into the ocean. Enormous Lake Arcana is in the west, the nation’s capital, Arthune, on its eastern shore. To the south where the arrowhead narrows is the Vortex Gulf. The Mysquanmic Vortex is located there and influences all aspects of Pannulus life. The Eventide Mountains dominate its center.

The next two largest islands, about equal in size, make up over thirty percent of Pannulus. Shorus, shaped like a bucking bronco, its tail to the north and head low, is in the extreme south and separated from Sancthor by the Akasha Sea. The Evertree Mountains fill its center. Subtonia Island, the fifth largest island, is between the bronco’s legs. Scurpia Island, shaped like a scorpion, its pincers facing northwest, is in the north, the Spinal Range running along its length. It’s separated from Sancthor Island by the Nevermist Sea and Ryskor Sea.

Also separating Scurpia from Sancthor is Serpent Island, the nation’s fourth largest. The country’s other islands are scattered.

In the original short story by Washington Irving and the Walt Disney movie, the legend of the Headless Horseman says that he carries his own severed head. That Ichabod Crane gets hit by a pumpkin instead is a big clue that he's being attacked by a disguised Brom Bones instead of by the real Horseman.

I can't say this has ever happened to me, but I understand some readers worry about getting to the end? 🤔

P.S If you know where this is from let me know so I can add credit.

"Order, order." Mister Muffins gazed slowly at the others around the gazebo, all comfortably resting in their identical, pink-and-blue-striped patio chairs. "Welcome to the sixty-seventh lunar gathering of the Nettle Place Society. The first item on our agenda—"

"What a bother," said Comtesse Mittens, barely stifling a yawn. "I was in the middle of sunbathing, you know."

"Comtesse, you know well this meeting is scheduled at the same time every moon—"

#PennedPossibilities 950 — Can your MC swim? If not, why not? If so, how did they learn?

She's got feathered wings. Blue. She likes to bathe. She's a day angel, not a bird, so it's not a bird bath but in a bathhouse. She was raised in the forests near the western coast, so she might have learned, but I don't know. Until swimming or drowning becomes a plot point, I won't either.

#WritersCoffeeClub #WCC 2026.03.05 —How do you make sure you don’t leave plot holes?

I am keenly aware that a weak premise or a too obvious yet missed solution for the protagonist can destroy a story. I regularly point out these things in movies and TV serials. Practically, when I feel I may be vague on details, reread the story as quickly as I can. Since my memory fades rather quickly, even a month is enough that I can see the story with fresher eyes. Depending on the story, I sometimes revise earlier chapters during composition to give me the juice to understand the flavors available to mix to make the best tasting concoction in the current chapter.

Beta readers can help here, also; I have scant experience with this, though.

My Name is Red
Novel by Orhan Pamuk

The Nobel Prize winner and one of today's most prominent contemporary Turkish writers delivers a novel that is a fiendishly devious mystery, a beguiling love story, a brilliant symposium on the power of art, and a “modern classic … rich and essential”

#WordWeavers 2026.03.05 —What’s the most supportive/uplifting thing you heard related to writing?

I recently read (I can't find the article) that according to big publishing companies there is a significant uptick in people in Asian markets opting to read physical books, especially in the English language. This has a lot to do with rising literacy rates. I wonder whether having a physical book rather than an eBook that can be snooped or erased by the vendor (I'm looking at you, Amazon) is a factor. English language reading going up is seriously reassuring.
