I was able to go to an art museum semi-recently! and it was so wonderful!! One of the exhibits was of Ed Drew (American, born, 1981)’s
Untitled works from the series Self Portrait: Arkansas, 2014.

In the exhibit statement, he said he is barefoot to feel the pain and joy of the land where his ancestors were enslaved, and to a certain degree, freed. He used a 4x5 camera, and also described leaving its strap in frame intentionally.

Photo of a framed black and white photograph. In it, a black man in a military uniform and bare feet sits hunched over in front of a large boulder. The boulder has lots of contrast, perhaps lichen or moss or paint, which evokes his camouflage. Trees rise up behind the boulder. In this black and white Framed photograph, there is a view of nature from a hill. In the distance is a hilly landscape, up close a rocky and grassy hillside. It took me a moment to find him in this photo, as his camouflage uniform hides him very well with the grass. His head and his feet could be rocks at first glance. But once you see him, lying flat, at a rather steep angle, it becomes visceral.
