8 years ago I bought #Amazon #FireHD. Never received any system updates till 2 days ago it was just forced. The tablet became almost unusable - >70% battery drain during 7 hours of standby, some apps stopped working, every tap takes ~ a second to react... 🤦♂️
Also had a bad experience with other Amazon products. Now definitely not buying anything Amazon branded
Amazon Fire HD 8 (2024) tablets bring memory and camera updates (and AI features)
Amazon’s newest Fire HD 8 tablet for 2024 is… a lot like the company’s 2022 model of this budget tablet. It’s the same size and shape, has the same display, and has the same processor. But the good news is that it also has the same low price tag… and does bring a couple of significant updates.
The new Amazon Fire HD 8 has 50% more RAM than its predecessor, and a slightly better rear […]

I replaced my current setup of waking up the #FireHD (#HomeAssistant dashboard).
My old setup
for waking up the tablet consisted of the following:
I had numerous issues with this setup that have a single origin: FireHD tablet software is crap.
HA companion app frequently looses connection to HA server. Or, the tablet frequently loses wifi connection (see the dropouts here). Sometimes, the tablet becomes unresponsive. A restart or cleaning HA companion app notification log helps. The result was that I stand in front of the tablet waiting like an idiot and nothing happened. Or it did, but the reliability was poor.
It’s annoying to restart the tablet every day.
So after reading the comment from Phil Pownall I decided to give YAKK a try.
My new setup:
Installation:
I installed YAKK on my FireHD 2020 unsing direct .apk download. Some gymnastics was needed, because built-in (Amazon’s) Silk browser didn’t want to open the .apk. Then I clicked ‘open in new tab.’ and it asked me if I want to download from untrusted yada yada.
That’s it. #YAKK android app monitors FireHD’s camera and detects the motion. Moreover, it can serve as a webcam for Home Assistant (stream is available at http://<IP where YAKK is running>:2112).
The good:
Challenges
There are only 3 minor annoyances that I still didn’t resolve. They’re not directly related to YAKK:
Do anyone have an idea how to solve these 3 issues?

If you have Amazon’s #FireHD (or any other #Android) tablet that shows your #homeassistant dashboard, you can make it talk.
I created a new automation (triggered by a motion sensor) which greets me when I approach the tablet:
I used the ‘Send notification’ action, chose the tablet and inserted ‘TTS‘ in the message field.
Then I switched to YAML editing, searched for the TTL and added two lines below it:
data: tts_text: Enter text here
The result:
The tablet greets me when I approach itProbably there are better ways to do it, but this was the quickest method for me.
Drawback of this method is that everytime you want to change the text, you have to edit automation’s YAML code. But what if you want to set greeting text from the UI?
Set the TTS text from the HA UI
Firstly, I created a new helper entity – input text (Settings / Devices / Helpers / create helper / Text):
Then I added it to a dashboard:
Then add the following code to the automation’s YAML instead of fixed text:
data: tts_text: "{{ states('input_text.kitchen_greeting') }}"
Voila!

I’m using an Amazon #FireHD tablet stuck to my fridge with several magnets and 3D printed case as a #homeassistant dashboard.
I read it’s bad for the tablet’s battery if it’s constantly plugged into a charger. Battery can swallow or worse.
So I installed Sonoff’s #ZBMini (Zigbee) smart switch into a socket where the charger is connected.
Added it to Zigbee2MQTT and created 2 simple automations:
I had to wait for more than a week for a battery to discharge and then automation triggered:
It needed 3 hrs to charge the battery from 20% to 80%.
Good. I hope this mechanism will prolong the life of the tablet battery.
I only wonder why tablets don’t manage this kind of charging / discharging control by themselves.
