#flarum

2025-11-30

I decided to setup a #LISP forum under community.metalisp.dev using #flarum.

Here is my motivation:

I started to hate reddit.

Reddit sells our data to AI corporations and advertisement corporations.

Lisp discussions cant be archived by the community.

Reddit owns our IP.

Stupid user engagement stuff.
etc.

I want to have a community driven forum focused on #lisp.

@marko onpas tuo weblate kätevä. Näppiharjoituksena kotoistin passwordless plugarin! Mitenköhän toi etenee itse projektiin?

@mttaggart I agree that #Discourse is the best *for the end user*. But the admin? It only comes as a Docker container, and it's not very performant, owing to the Ruby. I too endorse #Flarum. It's lightweight enough to run on a #RaspberryPi, no #Docker.

@mttaggart If you like discourse, the you'll definitely like @luceos 's

Finalement #phpBB c'était trop chaotique techniquement.

The #Flarum forum project is struggling to get their 2.0 stable released. A key developer has appealed for help:

Commentary on PS’ IPv6 Mail/Flarum Work

PS recently wrote about their fork of Flarum to support email addresses with IPv6 hosts, alongside testing integration with Postfix, Dovecot, and DeltaChat over Yggdrasil/Mycelium networks. This is genuinely interesting technical work — niche but valuable for those experimenting in alternative network ecosystems.

At the same time, some concerns arise:

  • Registration system: They allow any “fake” email address to bypass verification. While this lowers barriers to participation, it also opens the door to spam, abuse, and impersonation.
  • Stability & safety: The reliance on IPv6 literals and decentralized DNS raises questions about long-term reliability and the potential for misconfigurations that affect users.
  • Wellbeing & trust risks: If community accountability is weak, these technical systems could be misused in ways that harm others — especially in anonymous or loosely moderated spaces.

Independent observers should evaluate both the technical promise and the social risks of such experiments.

@bestest this is small #flarum instance I've been starting to setup for neighbours. Super low traffic.

Found #LibreBooking open source reservation calendar. Any experience on that? It would nicely sit next to #flarum due both using php & mariadb.

@stefano @_elena A really decent, performant #OpenSource forum software such as #Flarum, #PhpBB, or #Discourse, is right there. Do any of your 350k subscribers have a #RaspberryPi 5 lying around (wth an NVME drive), and have expertise? Flarum or PhpBB would run performantly on it for a huge number of concurrent users. Where is your #OpenSource spirit, to take things into your own hands?

Just launched a fresh Flarum instance for an upcoming gig platform where everyone can share ways to make money online. Aspiring to make this community into a hub where everyone looking to make some money online can come and discuss together, and potentially find some opportunities too.

@ikkeT glad to hear that, welcome to #flarum 🎉

@luceos ah, is really nice! My only gripe is that it doesn't work without JS (interaction, not just reading) since I browse the web mostly using elinks. This is a similar issue I have with .

(interestingly I cannot post on on either, haven't investigated why. Vanilla without JS strangely takes 10x longer for the post request).

You're right storage is cheap. Just checked, Flarum is 65MB (16MB Flarum itself, the rest as deps).

@thinkMoult at #flarum our ideology is to create an extensible first community software. Disabling all extensions, including bundled ones, will create a forum similar to your solution. Though it also supports, though not enabled by default, the scalability additions of queues, emails, auth providers etc. And yes, the codebase is fairly big even then. As for an argument for lean code bases, yeah definitely used to be a big thing. Nowadays storage is cheap though and less of a requirement.

I've set up a #Lemmy community for @silex:
lemmy.ml/c/Silex

Should this replace the current forums (powered by #Flarum)?
community.silex.me

Also, what should we do with the @silex account?

Started to look at what modern forums look like now. Besides #discourse. 😅

#nodebb is nice. Somewhat simple. #nodejs, #redis, and #mongodb.

#flarum is very intuitive. #php and #mariadb. Runs light and smooth.

Flarum liking for simplicity. Although nodebb has fediverse magic. 😎
