Commentary on PS’ IPv6 Mail/Flarum Work
PS recently wrote about their fork of Flarum to support email addresses with IPv6 hosts, alongside testing integration with Postfix, Dovecot, and DeltaChat over Yggdrasil/Mycelium networks. This is genuinely interesting technical work — niche but valuable for those experimenting in alternative network ecosystems.
At the same time, some concerns arise:
- Registration system: They allow any “fake” email address to bypass verification. While this lowers barriers to participation, it also opens the door to spam, abuse, and impersonation.
- Stability & safety: The reliance on IPv6 literals and decentralized DNS raises questions about long-term reliability and the potential for misconfigurations that affect users.
- Wellbeing & trust risks: If community accountability is weak, these technical systems could be misused in ways that harm others — especially in anonymous or loosely moderated spaces.
Independent observers should evaluate both the technical promise and the social risks of such experiments.
