Burning Gold: (From the teacher Beck at Nordsteimke.)[1] There is still a lot of money hidden in the earth. From time to time, it appears at night as a glimmering fire. Once, on a cold night, the horse herders were on the meadow near the Sandkamp close to the Wolfsburg[2] when they noticed a fire behind a shrub. They then sat around it in order to warm themselves, and one of them took a coal and put it on his pipe which had just gone out. He sucked on it again and again, but he was unable to light the pipe. The others noticed that the fire did not have any proper heat, and thus they disturbed it in order to fan its flames, but it did not flare up. The next morning, the one whose pipe had gone out found that two five groschen coins were inside of it. And when the herders now returned to the location, they discovered a lot of money at the spot where they had pushed the coals together. But everything else had vanished. Source: Voges, T.
