This week's recommendation comes all the way from Normandy, France, with swirling and swooping orchestral sounds woven around crispy drums, Battles-esque percussion and squelchy synths.

"Courants Ascendants" by R!GA is available to listen to on #Mirlo now. 🐦‍⬛

More ! More traditional Irish music played on harmonica #electrofolk (or #folktronica) style ! Here is The Congress Reel, played on a Suzuki Humming Tremolo in G. Accompaniment (beats!) done in #bitwig

I'd already done an electrofolk version of this reel, which was more on the weird side. This one is more on the dancy side of things !

Let me know what you think 😄

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Martyn Bennett "Grit" – 2003

Raw, defiant and utterly groundbreaking. Grit fuses ancient Scottish folk vocals with heavy electronics and breakbeats, creating a sound that's both tribal and futuristic. A powerful tribute to resilience and tradition, made all the more poignant by Bennett’s own health struggles during its creation...

I've recorded a couple of probably quite non-traditional versions of the fiddle tune Maggie Watson's Farewell to Blackhammer using a home made electric guitar, amp, and hide rattles, plus some other odds and ends played badly.

Warning: Michael Prater's Farewell to Blackhammer contains bad language (and some #synth).

If that sounds interesting there's more information and links to listen on my website.

Here's a traditional French/Canadian #folk song, played on a tremolo #harmonica (Suzuki Humming in D) with some electronic backing (making it #electrofolk of #folktronica )

I recorded this back in January (2025)

It's called "Isabeau s'y proméne", there are various variants of this song- and even more variants on the overall theme: the lost ring (you can see various variants on the theme here: chants-populaires-francais.com )
