"The national #PlantARowForTheHungry campaign, launched in 1995, has been encouraging home and community gardeners to do just that every year to help feed neighbors in need of fresh food.

"The program was spearheaded in 1995 by Anchorage Daily News garden columnist Jeff Lowenfels, who wrote a column encouraging his readers to plant extra crops and donate their harvests.

"After seeing the impact that his column had on local food donations, Lowenfels partnered with GardenComm International, then known as Garden Writers of America, to enlist garden columnists all over the country to promote the cause in their own communities. Since then, more than 20 million pounds of produce, providing more than 80 million meals, have been donated through the campaign by home gardeners.

"'All of this has been achieved without government subsidy or bureaucratic red tape — just people helping people,' according to organizers on the campaign’s website. And there’s no big advertising campaign, either — just garden columnists and their readers spreading the word."

Of course, I can’t just take from the world; I must also give back. So today, using the newly found free time that my previous employer gave me yesterday, I went to #volunteer at the Friendship Center. I sorted and stocked the back room to help prepare for their clients to come in to get food.

There are some things you might be able to do for #ReproductiveJustice on an individual level. Maybe be a #surrogate, and #advocate for it to be covered by #insurance. Or donate #gametes, and advocate for donation to eliminate #eugenics in the qualifications. Or #volunteer at a #daycare, or donate #diapers and #baby #formula to your local #FoodPantry, etc. Make sure you know where your nearest #PlannedParenthood is and what they do, and get that information out there.

That space, plus where garlics were dug, will be planted with broccoli, collards, kale, and brussels sprouts for fall harvests. On the farm earlier this week.

We started by weeding out the bush bean rows where I had harvested last time. They were pretty much done for the season so we pulled them out already. We used a shallow draw hoe to snap the weeds out of the dirt, at least the tops of them.

The soil was really wet from the rain, so we didn't use the seeder machine. Instead I used the side of the hoe and dragged it to create shallow trenches about an inch deep. Then we scattered bush beans (providers and blue lakes) along the trenches in a line. My manager said they seem to like being overcrowded as they will just flop over in the other direction from each other. And the rain wouldn't wash them out at this depth.

I got to stick around for a food pantry pick up and see some of the tomatoes, peppers, black berries, and more that they had harvested in huge quantities. The food pantry has a lot of staff to help pack and sort them. It's something that's easier to do when you're inside an air conditioned place and not out in 90 degree weather with high humidity.

Ended my morning on the farm combing my hands through camomile to pull off the heads. A volunteer shared this tip as previously folx were pinching them off one by one. We'll dry them then decide what to do with them later.
