A question for my FOSS-interested friends out there!
Some friends and I have been talking about alternatives to Discord, for...reasons.
We're aware of two potential alternatives currently, namely mattermost and matrix.
Each has their good stuff, but they lack some of the functionality we're seeking. Somewhat cosmetic, some of it, but important for the community we want to build.
So: does anyone know of a Discord-like FOSS project that incorporates:
- encryption
- bios/profiles
- pronouns
- channels of some sort
- possibly voice or video chat?
- accommodation for plurality
- no degree in computer-touching required for use (other than admin)
I don't know if such a thing exists, just casting out a hook and seeing if there's a nibble.

My faith is gone, but I can't really blame Gina. I've been in similar situations before as a moderator, and they're extremely tough. The intentions are clearly good, coming from a very similar worldview to mine. Although I fear the community might now attract bad kinds of people, perhaps she puts her words in her mouth and effectively fights that.
I have too little to lose to move away from #Fosstodon so I'll be sticking around for the ride. I just use it to scream into the void :)

Hey @Mastodon friends, I'm trying to move my account from #Fosstodon to #sociallinuxpizza (social.linux.pizza), to get back inclusiveness and because I am not ok how people were treated. I've followed the official moving accounts' guide with redirect handles, but it still doesn't work. New account says fully operational, but also that there is a pending review. I had a first registration on last Friday and another attempt, but I cannot redirect the old account to the new one. any tips?🙏
When I first came to Mastodon--specifically, on the #Fosstodon instance--I had already abandoned Xitter (the X makes a "sh" sound, like in Mandarin pinyin) for Bluesky, and I didn't think mastodon was ever likely to be my platform of choice--not enough normal people, too techie-focused, likely to be an echo chamber.
I was very wrong about that. I've been slowly realizing that over the course of months, but today I had an important realization, and perhaps discovered a useful metric.

The whole prelude is basically textbook ingratiation manipulation.
So yeah, people are and will continue to call #fosstodon a #nazibar because that's how you behave and treat people.
