Ooooo, the new framework 12 inch looks like an opensource Surface and I'm very here for it. I love all the colors, especially the bubble gum and lavender! It's a tablet too, so I could use it to replace my ipad when it finally stops getting security updates. They're even going to have a stylus and its fully repairable. This is very tempting to invest in possibly as soon as next year depending on when my updates for my 2018 ipad 11-inch stop.

Screenshot from the framework website. On the left it says "Computers shouldn't be boring. Framework Laptop 12 is a 12.2" convertible with stylus support. Designed for easy customization, upgrades, and repairs." Below that are two buttons: "Pre-oder" and "Learn more".

On the right there are five Framework Laptop 12s in gray, bubble gum and teal, lavender, black, and light green. They are in different states showing how they can bend. The first and last (gray and green) are both set on the table like placeholder note cards, with the screen and keyboard facing the floor they're on. The lavendar is closed, the bubble gum is 3/4 open, and the final one is in tablet mode with the keyboard behind it completely so it looks like just a tablet with a stylus below it. On the tablet, it says 12 in stylus drawn letters.

Anyone have experience with color calibration on linux? Specifically with gnome?

The gnome docs suggest a pantone huey is the best supported and cheapest option. I can find them on ebay for around $20. Will I regret not going with a more expensive option?

Got my @frameworkcomputer a few days ago. So far so good. @fedora works nice and smooth. I haven’t had much time to play with it but I like it!

120 Hz screen, amazing keyboard, even better than #ThinkPad’s! I thought small up and down buttons would be a problem for me but they aren’t! You don’t really need those in #Emacs hehe. Touchpad is good enough! I’d say similar to older pre-haptic MacBook’s.

However a few downsides:
5 GHz WiFi doesn’t work. It connects to the network but can’t access anything. Not sure if it’s the laptop’s problem or mine. 2.4 GHz works fine.
Built in speakers aren’t good but I don’t care because I use them about never.

Oof... replacing the liquid metal with PTM thermal interface on the Framework Laptop 16 looks to be quite an ordeal. 😬

Not sure if I really want to go through all of that at this point.

Of course you shouldn't lift it at a dangerous acceleration, but I found that if it's fast enough so that the lid/screen is a bit more open than it was before (due to inertia) afterwards, there's a good chance that I produced a click. (_Please_ don't damage your screen hinges while trying this!)

I wouldn't say that it's an "issue", but it's certainly good to know :)

I'd love to hear from anyone who's able to reproduce this with their own device!

Hey #FrameworkLaptop 13 owners: I had a strange issue where video playback would sometimes stop once I physically moved the laptop, e.g. from the couch to the desk.

Turns out I can click my touchpad – from below.

To reproduce, grab the laptop (lid open) with one hand, with your thumb next to the touchpad and the other fingers on the underside of the case, opposite to where the upper half of the touchpad is, as pictured. Your grip should feel safe and secure.

Now, quickly lift the laptop.

Photo of how to hold the laptop, seen from above, with my (censored) thumb next to the touchpad, and my fingers extending below it.Photo from below, showing that my (again, censored) fingers, especially the middle and ring finger, are placed pretty far into the direction of the center of the case.

@mikrotik Is that a #FrameworkLaptop in the foreground?

P.S. Viewing in NewPipe works too.

I have to say: The Framework Laptop 13's 2.8K display is _great_ to edit photos. High resolution, can be very bright if you need it to, and apparently excellent color reproduction.

The latest #FrameworkLaptop 16 feature: regularly crashing during sleep mode so you open it to a booting laptop instead of your presentation.

I got a lot of questions about the laptop at RustWeek. The short version is: its behavior would be unacceptable for an EVT prototype.

Sigh.

@frameworkcomputer Any updates on Coreboot support? Heard it was "intended but low on the priority list" but that was years ago if I recall correctly. Would love to get Libreboot (or just Coreboot) working on my fw16. Thank you!

Do you know that the warranty length offered by @frameworkcomputer varies by country? I had planned to order additional parts and expansion cards for my #FrameworkLaptop, but I don’t want to be shortchanged by a 1-year warranty instead of 2 years.

I would love if #FrameworkLaptop allowed us to customize the keyboard layout (and super key) before buying the keybord. It would be so awesome to have a #ColemakDH Framework laptop keyboard with a #linux super key!

My partner wanted to enable me to get the new generation #FrameworkLaptop, as a birthday gift. I signed up for an account and he provided his debit card as a payment method.

My batch comes up, I'm all ready and—

There is an issue with payment.

I contact @frameworkcomputer support and ask them what the issue is. Got told the bank declined the charge. Okay, so maybe the authorization timed out between deposit and charge of the rest. Re-enter the same debit card, told them to try again.

Got told they can't issue charges on their end and the system does it automatically.

A week goes by, nothing happens.

I change my payment method to my own credit card, hoping that makes the system spring alive. A week goes by, no charge.

I contacted support again, telling them I updated my payment method. Got told to wait again, the system is automatic.

So, imagine my surprise when instead of a charge, I get a canceled order.

Needless to say I'm pissed.

Are you meaning to tell me, emailing support for two weeks and trying my damned hardest to give Framework money gets me a canceled order instead and nobody at this company has control over the billing process?!?! Are you kidding me?! 😡

I emailed them again to undo the cancellation and just friggin charge my card, like I've been telling them to for two weeks. Haven't heard back yet.

This really doesn't inspire confidence that Framework has their stuff together 🫤

Finally got around to setting up the fingerprint reader on the #FrameworkLaptop to work on #fedoralinux, a nice simple setup on KDE and it works really well for logins and sudo authentication too.

If you are plugging a portable USB-C powered monitor into a Framework 16 laptop and the monitor keeps rebooting ... it's not getting enough power.

You have to use a USB-C module that's plugged into one of some specific sockets -- the two four "furthest back" on either side, kinda closest to where you would normally expect to power a laptop. The front two won't work.

And: "Ports 1,2,4,5 are shared on a first come first serve basis. So they are 1.5A by default, but one port from any of these can negotiate 3A over PD. Once that is taken, the other ports are limited to 1.5A. Ports 3,6 are 900mA."

There's a flyer that comes in the box about this, but I didn't make the connection (pun intended) until the symptom popped up.

And a KB article:

@YesJustWolf yessss!
Who knows?...maybe one morning your coffee will just accidentally spill all over it 😆😆
For me, Im thinking in a #FrameworkLaptop or #slimbook
But, since I'll travel to Valencia the next weeks, makes sense going for a Slimbook.
