Je suis en arrêt maladie à la suite d’une petite opération (rien de grave pas d’inquiétude !), et pendant deux semaines je n’ai pas dessiné une seule fois. Le plus inquiétant, c’est que ça ne m’a pas du tout manqué... hier j’ai quand même fait quelques croquis après avoir vu le formidable New York-Miami de #frankcapra

Oggi 18 maggio, nel 1897, nasce il regista italiano naturalizzato statunitense Frank Capra

Frank Russell Capra, nome originario Francesco Rosario Capra, nasce il 18 maggio 1897 a Bisacquino, in provincia di Palermo. Emigrato a sei anni con la famiglia in California, a Los Angeles, nel 1922 dirige il cortometraggio "Fultah Fisher's Boarding House. La sua prima regia di un lungometraggio è "La grande sparata".
Il primo film totalmente sonoro, invece, è "L'affare Donovan", una detective story del 1929.
Il successo straordinario arriva con "Accadde una notte", che vince gli Oscar per la migliore regia, per il miglior film, per la migliore attrice protagonista, per il migliore attore protagonista e per la migliore sceneggiatura.
Tra il 1936 e il 1941 conquista trentuno candidature e sei premi Oscar con soli cinque film.
Dopo "La vita è meravigliosa", del 1946 va incontro a un declino professionale accentuato dalla diminuzione della sua creatività.
Poco più che sessantenne abbandona l'attività cinematografica, scegliendo di ritirarsi: muore il 3 settembre 1991 a La Quinta alla età di 94 anni.

"Shown on American TV and later in US classrooms, The Unchained Goddess explains what weather is, and how weather works. And, really quite presciently, it talks about the risk of man-made climate change … in 1958. One of the narrators declares:

"Even now, man may be unwittingly changing the world’s climate through the waste products of its civilization. Due to our releases in #factories and #automobiles every year of more than six billion tons of #CarbonDioxide, which helps the air absorb heat from the sun, our atmosphere may be getting warmer.

"And is that bad, the question gets asked?:

'Well, it’s been calculated a few degrees rise in the Earth’s temperature would melt the polar ice caps. And if this happens, an inland sea would fill a good portion of the Mississippi valley. Tourists in glass bottom boats would be viewing the drowned towers of Miami through 150 feet of tropical water. For in weather, we’re not only dealing with forces of a far greater variety than even the atomic physicist encounters, but with life itself.'"

Oh damn. I just noticed it was directed by Frank Capra. Director of Its a Wonderful Life, Mr Smith Goes to Washington, and It Happened One Night.

This is a much more tragic and interesting. Not that his later films aren’t good, I’m just curious what other films he might have made if he’d continued to have creative freedom.
