Federating knowledge: exploring ways to bridge wikis and notes

Join the workshop at #39C3!

NEW DATE: day 4, TODAY at 13:40 @ Free Knowledge Habitat Workshop Area.

Most people and organisations have their very own way of acquiring, organising, archiving, sharing, and collaborating on knowledge repositories. A broad spectrum of opinions and approaches resulted in a diverse and rich ecosystem of knowledge management solutions. Nevertheless, this also implies scattered and disconnected knowledge sources. What would it mean to build bridges among wikis and federate knowledge?

This workshop is going to be heavily centred on a twofold discussion, exploring the challenge of federated knowledge starting from two questions.

  • What does it mean to federate knowledge repositories?
  • Instead of pursuing a silver-bullet solution to embrace all use-cases, what would it mean to foster and enable interoperability for different software?

These questions stem from years of questioning and wondering how to integrate my personal note-taking and collective, participatory knowledge management at work, in organisations, institutions, and informal collectives. Recently, I began actively researching this topic as I started playing with the MediaWiki API to cross-synchronise my local Markdown notes and the XPUB wiki, the public learning wiki of the Experimental Publishing master. I am puzzled by taking advantage of the potential of a specific software (in this case, MediaWiki) while fearing of being locked-in.

Some further, more specific, insights and questions:

  • Local-first approaches and software (e.g. Reflection)
  • Interesting experiments based on existing protocols, such as Ibis
  • What do we take of semi-open and obscure yet very cool initiatives like Anytype
  • The power and the limits of plain-text: how to enable collaboration on simple Markdown files and build on top of it, as Obsidian does

Just deleted my #Academia account. Didn't use it much, especially since it became a spam source to sell me stuff I don't need. The data harvesting/stealing to train more AI shit was the final straw.
I don't have many papers published, since I've stopped researching a long, long time ago (I can still remember ๐Ÿ˜Š) but I'll provide them to anyone who asks.
And maybe it's time to build a personal website with my portfolio...

Molinism

This is named after the 16th century Spanish Jesuit theologian Luis de Molina. Itโ€™s the thesis that God has middle knowledge, or scientia Media: the knowledge of counterfactuals, particularly counterfactuals regarding human action. It looks to reconcile the apparent tension of Divine Providence & human free will.

Molinists, following Luis de Molinaโ€™s example, present Godโ€™s knowledge in a sequence of 3 logical moments. The 1st of Godโ€™s knowledge of necessary truths or natural Knowledge. The truths are independent of Godโ€™s will & are non-contingent. This knowledge includes the full range of logical possibilities.

The 2nd is Godโ€™s free Knowledge. This type of knowledge consists of contingent truths that are dependent on Godโ€™s will, or truths, that God brings about. Free Knowledge encompasses the future of what will happen.

In between Godโ€™s natural & free knowledge is His โ€œmiddle knowledgeโ€ that contains the range of possible things that would happen given certain circumstances, by which God knows what His free creatures would do in any situation. These truths that donโ€™t have to be true. But are true without God being the primary course of them.

Molinists use Matthew 11:23 to scripturally support their case. They claim that in this example, God knows what His free creatures would choose under hypothetical would choose under hypothetical circumstances. Namely that the Sodomites wouldโ€™ve responded to Jesusโ€™ miracles still have been in existence in Jesusโ€™ day, given that hypothetical situation.

Matthew 11:23 has whatโ€™s commonly called a counterfactual of creaturely Freedom. However, counterfactuals are to be distinguished from foreknowledge. Middle knowledge is to be distinguished from Godโ€™s knowledge of counterfactuals.

Molinists say the logical ordering of events for creation would be as follows: 1) Godโ€™s natural knowledge of necessary truths. 2) Godโ€™s middle knowledge, including counterfactuals. Then the Creation of the World. 3) Godโ€™s free knowledge, the actual ontology of the world.

Ontology is a branch of metaphysics dealing with the nature of being. The placing of Godโ€™s middle knowledge between Godโ€™s knowledge of necessary truths & Godโ€™s creative decree is crucial.
