These are the first 3 paragraphs of the FT Opinion newsletter today:

"attempted conversion of the American republic into an arbitrary dictatorship"

"doom-loop"

"clearest step yet towards authoritarianism"

The FT saying it as they see it.

We are living in the early stages of a revolution, writes Martin Wolf. The attempted conversion of the American republic into an arbitrary dictatorship will no doubt have the greatest impact on the US itself. But it is inevitably having a huge impact on the rest of the world. While it is far too early to know what the full consequences will be, it is not too early to make informed guesses on some aspects. Trump’s tariff war brings with it unpredictability and a consequent loss of confidence. This could lead to far greater declines in trade and investment than projected. Lower growth will increase social, political and fiscal fragility, so raising perceptions of risk in markets. The global economy may find itself in a doom-loop.Elsewhere, Edward Luce unpacks the significance of the Trump administration’s actions in Los Angeles. The decision to deploy the National Guard in response to local protests is the government’s clearest step yet towards authoritarianism. Trump is only beginning his pursuit of America’s “enemy from within”, Edward warns.

Still more on stablecoins in the #FT

"'Stablecoins need to find a killer application, not served by existing arrangements, attractive enough for sufficiently large scale adoption to scale . . . But what is this application?'

I would argue that we already know exactly what this application is. It’s crime."

Debt is crushing the developing world

A reminder and something that has been ignore by many in the West, most governments willing to turn a blind eye to the plundering of already poor countries by the companies that they regulate.

Start of linked article - title reads
Debt is crushing the developing world
There is an urgent need to rethink financial structures that are
failing billions of people

Below a drawing of a small bowed tree chained to a very very large ball is shown.Screenshot of the conclusion to the article, reads
‘There is growing consensus among experts: current debt policies in many developing countries are serving financial markets, not the people. This threatens to condemn entire nations to a lost decade - or worse. A lost decade or more for some of the poorest and most vulnerable is something the world can ill-afford.
The debate must move beyond narrow narratives of success based simply on avoiding financial defaults. It must reflect the lived realities of billions whose futures are being mortgaged to serve old debts under unsustainable terms.
And it must begin to address the fundamental flaws in the global architecture that have led to recurrent debt and development crises. Now is the time for responsible action.’

I'm considering alternatives to the #NYTimes for my mainstream media. I don't have time to read many, so I need to choose just one. Right now, the #FT is my main candidate. They provide good US coverage but excel in international news. For example, today's Ukrainian attack on Russian air bases is prominently featured at the top of their front page, while the NY Times has it as a small header in the middle under US political news. The only downside is that the subscription isn't cheap. :(

🌍 We are “confronted with an irony of history: (…) It is Europe that now cleaves closer to the Enlightenment values of secular reason, mistrust of organised faith & commitment to deliberation; the US that is in the hands of social conservatives dreaming of a return to traditional values.”

#FinancialTimes did a deep dive on the business model of the world's second largest #stablecoin: Circle's #USDC. It's the one that's managed by an American company and is significantly less connected to Chinese organized #crime than the other #stablecoins.

Circle, which has a very deep business relationship with #Coinbase, is trying to go public this year or next. This is their second attempt - they filed to go public ca. 2021 but ended up not doing so because... no one wanted to buy shares in a company like Circle.

I suffered through reading Circle's original SEC filing in 2021 and it made clear that a) Circle wasn't making any money and b) executive compensation was *absurdly* high... but that was in a low interest rate environment. according to #FTAV they can't even make the math work in today's high interest rate world, which surprised me.

Within hours of another "yippy" auction, the approved sweeping task cuts (mostly to rich folk).

In the secondary market the 30-year treasuries are now past 5%. Pressure mounts on the market.

Over at the a random commentator put it sharply: "It's going to be a Big Beautiful ."

“OpenAI has agreed to acquire former Apple design chief Sir Jony Ive’s hardware start-up io for $6.4bn in a bet on alternatives to the smartphone as the dominant device to access AI.

The ChatGPT maker has paid $5bn for full ownership of io, in an all-equity deal. It already had a 23 per cent stake. The 55 employees working at io will join OpenAI, but Ive will not become an employee, according to people close to the deal.”

US Health Care - a symptom of a broken society?

'America is the only advanced economy without a system of universal health coverage. The US spends more than $4.5tn annually on healthcare — and is projected to soon account for one-fifth of its economy. Even on a per capita basis, other large, rich nations spend about half as much as America'

And many other nations have better outcomes.

But hey it 'boosts the economy'

Photo. Operating room, caption 'Waste, overtreatment and insurance fee models all contribute to US ‘economic activity’Text from limnke article
Reads
'Still, significant sums are going towards poor health outcomes and a system that is, in part, self-perpetuating. And this is picked up in measures of economic activity (as are other less productive activities and expenditures).
This can be corrected for. “There is a value to mortality decline that does not appear in the national income accounts, in the way that health expenditures do,” says Dean Jamison, Emeritus Professor at the University of California, San Francisco in the Institute for Global Health Sciences.
In a recent study, researchers including Jamison estimated the economic value of reducing avoidable mortality. (They found populations globally are willing to concede around one-fifth of their current income in exchange for a year living at the lowest mortality rates observed in the longest living countries, such as Japan and South Korea.)
For example, take France and the US between 2000 and 2019. “Growth in GDP per capita in the US exceeded that in France, but the value of mortality decline in France exceeded that in the US,” notes Jamison. Indeed, when adjusting for relative improvements in mortality risk reduction, America looks much less exceptional.
There are a few takeaways here. First, the US may be exceptional for outperforming other rich nations when it comes to economic activity — but GDP is a deceptive measure of welfare.'
