Samyang Releases the 12mm f/2 AF Lens for Fujifilm X-Mount

Samyang has announced the 12mm f/2 autofocus lens for Fujifilm X-mount. This APS-C wide-angle lens is compact lightweight, and features a stepping motor system for what the company promises to be fast and accurate autofocus.

As noted by DPReview, the lens appears to be a re-mounting of the 12mm f/2 AF for Sony E-mount that Samyang announced earlier this year.

The Samyang 12mm f/2 AF Compact Ultra Wide Angle lens weighs 7.51 ounces, is 2.33-inches long, and is billed as a compact, rugged, yet lightweight autofocus lens for what the company says is the best combination of value and performance that it could create. It also provides a rectilinear 99.1-degree angle of view and has added weather sealing protection.

It features a build design of 12 elements in 10 groups, five of which are categorized as "special" optics: one aspherical element, one hybrid aspherical element, and three extra-low dispersion elements. These elements combine to reduce aberrations and distortion to allow for what the company says are sharp and "thoroughly corrected" images. Samyang says that it also has an "advanced" version of the company's Ultra Multi Coating that allows for maximum light transmission, contrast, and color accuracy while also controlling ghosting and flare.

The Samyang 12mm f/2 AF uses a linear stepping motor which combines a more compact design with what the company says is improved autofocus performance. Samyang says that by requiring the movement of only a single focusing group, the optic delivers especially fast, quiet, and precise focusing in both stills and video applications. Samyang also adds that it has a close focusing distance of 7.48-inches with no change in length or front element rotation.

Samyang notes that the lens is specifically designed to work with Fujifilm cameras that use an X-trans sensor, and there are a few models that are not compatible with the lens. A full compatibility list can be found on the company's product page.

The design of the lens is one that Samyang has been implementing in all its latest optics, and uses a matte black finish with a micro-pattern rubber on the focusing ring and uses an all-metal housing.

The Samyang 12mm f/2 AF Compact Ultra Wide Angle lens comes packed with a removable petal-shaped hood, lens caps, and a custom-fitted case and is available for pre-order on Samyang's website for $499.

Pergear Reveals a 10mm f/5.6 Pancake Fisheye Lens for Multiple Mounts

Pergear has announced the new 10mm f/5.6 fisheye lens for Fuji X-mount, Micro Four Thirds, and Sony E-mount.

The ultra-wide manual lens provides a 172-degree angle of view, which the company says is perfect for exploring creativity through distorting and exaggerating normal perspectives.

Pergear says that the new lens also makes it a great choice for close-up shots and unique portraits, alongside the more traditional architecture, street, and landscape photography that an ultra-wide lens is generally used for.

The new fisheye lens is made of solid metal but weighs only 100 grams (0.2 pounds). The front lens has a multi-layer coating that suppresses flare and ghosting. It also adds greater contrast and color reproduction when shooting in strong lighting conditions, the company claims.

The lens comes with a built-in petal-shaped lens hood to provide protection for the lens and also to prevent stray light from entering the lens and causing unwanted flare.

Before shooting, Pergear reminds users to change the camera setting to "shoot without lens" to ensure the camera recognizes the lens as it is manual-only.

As shown in the Pergear example images below, the resulting photo is heavily distorted but it covers a large area of the scene in front of the lens. The examples confirm that this is a unique lens that photographers would use for particular creative choices.

England-based photographer and filmmaker Chris Orange shared his first impressions after trying the lens with his Fujifilm camera. He highlighted just how small and lightweight the lens is, which makes it great for traveling.

Although this type of lens is not a sought-after addition for general photography setup, it can add something unique to those who are willing to introduce unusual focal lengths in their work and are prepared to shoot with a manual-only lens.

Orange concludes that the lens could be enjoyed by those who favor lightweight gear and don't want to spend much on a new lens.

The Pergear 10mm f/5.6 fisheye lens joins the ultra-wide lens lineup alongside the 10mm f/8 APS-C manual focus, wide-angle pancake lens which was released at the start of 2021 and offers greater mount compatibility.

The new Pergear 10mm f/5.6 fisheye lens is available on Pergear's online store for $89.

Tamron Launches the 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 for Sony and Fujifilm

Previously revealed as a development announcement in July, Tamron has announced final details and availability for its 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 Di III-A VC VXD for Fujifilm X-mount and Sony E-Mount.

As mentioned in the original development announcement, this lens will be Tamron's first for Fujifilm X-Mount.

Tamron touts the 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 as the world's first 16.6x all-in-one zoom lens for APS-C. It covers the full-frame equivalent focal length range of 27mm to 450mm with a minimum object distance of 5.9-inches at the wide end along with a magnification ratio of 1:2.

The lens uses Tamron's proprietary VXD linear motor focus mechanism that allows it to achieve autofocus speed and precision that the company says stands among the best of all zoom lenses in its class. Tamron says that the performance of the autofocus is consistent throughout the zoom range and works excellently for tracking a moving subject and is ideal for animals, aircraft, railways, and other moving objects. Additionally, as a linear motor, it is not only fast, it is near silent.

Tamron claims that, as far as image quality is concerned, the 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 is one of the best performing all-in-one zoom lenses for APS-C mirrorless cameras available. Tamron says that in order to achieve the zoom ratio of 16.6x while also ensuring that high image quality the lens features a well-balanced arrangement of elements.

Left: Fujifilm X-mount version | Right: Sony E-mount version

The lens is constructed of 19 elements in 15 groups and includes three aspherical elements and four low dispersion elements that Tamron says together effectively suppress optical aberrations. The company says that it maintains high resolving power from the center to the corners through the entire zoom range. The lens features a seven-bladed circular diaphragm and a 67mm front filter size.

Below are a set of images provided by Tamron, taken Noboru Sonehara with the lens on a Sony a6600:

Tamron will release the 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 Di III-A VC VXD for both Sony E-mount and Fujifilm X-Mount, but at different times. The Sony E-Mount version will be available in September while the Fujifilm X-Mount version is expected to arrive on October 28. Tamron does warn that these timelines could change due to the global health crisis. Both versions of the lens will cost $699.

Tamron Launches 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 for Sony E-Mount APS-C Cameras

Tamron has announced that the previously-announced 18-300mm F/3.5-6.3 Di III-A VC VXD for Sony E-mount will be available this September for $699.

While the Sony E-mount version will be available in September, the Fujifilm X-mount version is still under development but is expected to also launch this fall, though no specific date was provided. When it comes to market, it will be Tamron's first Fujifilm X-mount lens.

As revealed in July when Tamron originally announced its development, the 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 Di III-A VC VXD will cover a range of approximately 27mm to 450mm in a 35mm full-frame equivalent.

With this broad coverage, it empowers shooting in a wide variety of situations, including everyday life and travel snapshots, both wide-angle and dynamic ultra-telephoto landscape photography and macro photography.

It is the first lens for APS-C mirrorless cameras with a 16.6x zoom ratio, which covers the wide-angle through what Tamron calls the ultra-telephoto range. At the wide end, it has a minimum aperture of f/22 and at the long end it has a minimum aperture of f/40.

Optically, the lens features 19 elements in 15 groups, with three hybrid aspherical elements and four low-dispersion elements to suppress optical aberrations. Tamron says that throughout the zoom range, the lens maintains high resolving power from the center to the corners. It features seven aperture blades. Additionally, as most other Tamron lenses for mirrorless cameras, the lens features a unified 67mm filter size.

The lens utilizes Tamron's VXD linear motor focus mechanism that the company says achieves autofocus speed and precision that Tamron says stands among the best of all all-in-one zoom lenses. The company says it will perform well when tracking moving subjects in focus and is also extremely quiet, allowing it to be used in a wide range of situations.

It has a minimum focus distance of 5.9-inches at 18mm with a maximum magnification ratio of 1:2, which means it performs admirably in up-close shooting situations despite its extremely large optical range.

The Tamron 18-300mm F/3.5-6.3 Di III-A VC VXD will be available on September 24 for $699 for Sony E-Mount, and as mentioned a Fujifilm X-Mount will also be available this fall, with a specific date to come at another time. Presumably, the lens will cost the same for the Fujifilm version.

7Artisans Launches a 50mm f/0.95 Lens for Multiple APS-C Mounts

Chinese camera lens manufacturer 7Artisans has announced the affordable $236 APS-C 50mm f/0.95 lens for Sony E, Nikon Z, Fujifilm X, EOS-M, and Micro Four Thirds (MFT) mounts.

The new 50mm lens joins what appears to be a consistently growing lineup of interesting and affordable manual lenses for mirrorless systems giving photographers and videographers even more choices for creative tools to add to their arsenals.

7Artisan's new 50mm lens will feature a "de-clicking" aperture with a range of f/0.95 to f/16. The design should make it useful especially for videographers. According to the technical specifications, the lens has a minimum focusing distance of 0.45 meters (17.7 inches), has a 31.8-degree field of view, a 62mm filter thread, and a 13-bladed aperture diaphragm. The lens is constructed of seven elements in five groups, and 7Artisans says that it features two HOYA ultra-low dispersion glass elements. The company says the lens body is made entirely of metal (including the lens cap) and weighs 416 grams. Additionally, 7Artisans claims that when attached to a mirrorless system, the lens and body are very equally balanced -- a challenging task given the sheer number of mount options that the lens is available for.

It is worth noting that the new manual-focus lens, like most of the 7Artisans line, does not come with vibration or shake reduction features. To keep the lenses budget-friendly, most of the lenses the company produces are pretty bare-boned: other than featuring fast apertures, the lenses are pretty devoid of other features. Additionally, while the "clickless" aperture ring is beneficial to videographers, still-photographers will have to double-check before shooting to ensure they have the appropriate setting for the shot they plan to take.

The Indonesian photography YouTube channel InfoFotografi already has a review of the lens available (with english subtitles) which gives the best look at the lens and its capabilities so far.

The 7Artisans lenses have proven to be some of the most affordable ways to get an incredibly "fast" glass that performs impressively well despite the low cost and in spite of the limitations that come with the all-manual design. To get an idea of how the lens performs, especially the quality of the out-of-focus areas (or bokeh), 7Artisans provided a set of sample images that can be seen below.

The 7Artisans APS-C 50mm f/0.95 manual lens will be officially available from the company's website and vendors starting on August 8th for approximately $236.
