In 2014, my uncle gave me his old #PowerMac #G5 as he bought a new #Mac for pro video work. There was some kind of hardware issue with it, IIRC.
I had one helluva time getting #Debian installed on it. It kept failing to install the boot loader, which wasn't #GRUB. Anyway, I figured I would install #FreeBSD. It installed fine, booted fine, performance was fine, NIC supported, but....
It was a Tier 2 architecture. At that time FreeBSD, while supporting multiple ISAs, prioritized them in terms of support with x86-64 being Tier 1. Tier 2 doesn't have nearly the same level of support from the FreeBSD team.
In my case with the G5 only ports, not packages, were available. EVERYTHING had to be compiled and installed. Aside from some shells and other CLI tools, builds took ages and often failed.

Apart from the fact that I cannot choose this gorgeous G2 phone anymore, to play music on the road, BT, I will not be able to wonder how much technology was put in such a small phone

Ok, had a weekend off and relaxed yesterday night doing some retro computing.
Installed #MacOSXServer #Tiger on the old #PowerMac #G5. Luckily I remembered that this machine does boot from a USB pen drive when ones uses the right commands in #OpenFirmware.
Services started: #blojsom and the #WebObjects server.

Yesterday evening I unceremoniously and sadly deleted, one by one, every app every photo every video and every document - all data from icloud - using a lovely pink iPad Mini.
The day before was the same, for several iphones, then a purged Apple Watch too. The laptops were before, long ago. My favorite was the 1Ghz Titanium G4 PowerBook - I'll always miss that perfection.
So, goodbye to modern Apple Inc. I loved your ways and means, your engineering prowess, industrial design, and the inspiration in every direction offered over so many decades.
I'm keeping the water-cooled Quad Core G5 PowerMac (PPC64 970MP A1177). You can attempt to pry it from my cold dead hands alongside a GP101... but please do not touch that one last, beautiful, and forever best example of IBM + Apple innovation - before Apple leadership sold out to Intel, pushed upon every emacs user the worthless Touchbar, and the scissor-chicklet keyboards with a lawsuit. But never forget Liquidass, crowning achievement and example of Apple's downfall.
How sad; sorry about your demise, Apple. I'll miss who you once were.

Given the open source nature of Open Firmware, I'm surprised features like USB boot capability haven't been backported to older New World Macs by the community.
I have no idea if current builds would fit on 1 MB ROM present in New World Macs, or how much headroom there is for deployment of a modern OFW ROM image for even more ambitious projects without resorting to hardware mods.

Okay fedi, see if you can help me out with this.
I have a 1.8GHz Dual Processor PowerMac G5, PCI, running 10.4 Tiger.
4 RAM slots, takes DDR sticks. Each slot has a PC3200U stick in it, 1GB each for 4GB total. Maximum it can handle is 4GB.
With all four sticks in, it only recognises two. Sometimes DIMM0/1 works, sometimes DIMM2/3 works. System always shows only 2GB RAM. I have tried the following:
- One stick at a time (2 flashing lights)
- Two sticks at a time (2 flashing lights)
- Three sticks at a time (once it flashed 3 times, once it booted with 0/1 not working but 2/3 working)
- All four sticks at a time (boots, with two slots not working)
- Switching sticks around (two are Kingston sticks, two are Crucial. Tried swapping them around, switching between pairs, no change)
- Cleaning the slots with contact cleaner
- Cleaning the sticks with contact cleaner and WD-40
- Trying all the slots with various configurations. Sometimes 0/1 works with 2/3 dead, sometimes 0/1 is dead whilst 2/3 works.
I am at a complete loss as to what’s going on. Clearly all 4 sticks of RAM work, but there seems to be no rhyme or reason as to why it won’t recognise all four.
Has it just finally bit the dust or am I being stupid? As far as I know all 4 sticks worked when it was put into storage a couple of years ago.
