This is a close-up black and white photo in landscape format of a Northern Gannet in flight. Gjesværstappan, Norway (2017).

Above and to the left of centre is a single Northern Gannet (Morus Bassanus) seabird, inflight from left to right and filling about half of the photo. Our seabird is viewed from below and obliquely with the right and undersides in view. The bird is looking ahead and has a long and slightly hooked upper beak, rendered a very light grey. There is a black patch surrounding the large eye with a thin black line stretching from the eye patch, under the beak and (unseen) up the far side. The majority of the body and wings are a brilliant white. The leading edge of the outboard section of the wings are black with the outboard parts of the trailing edge of the wings a dark grey to black. While the inner wing is outstretched, at the wings elbow the outer wing is down swept. In the background is a clear and cloudless sky rendered a dark grey.

The location is over the sea near the Gjesværstappan Islands: at 71º North is high above the Arctic Circle and on the boundary between the Norwegian Sea and the Arctic Ocean.

He tucks his wings against his body and speeds up.

Es ist schon wieder 5 Jahre her, dass ich #Helgoland besucht habe. Es wird mal wieder Zeit.
#Basstölpel (Morus bassanus) so hautnah zu erleben, ist alleine schon die Reise wert.

Nahaufnahme eines Basstölpel-Kopfes im Profil. Das markante Merkmal ist der lange, spitz zulaufende Schnabel mit schwarzen Linien und das leuchtend blaue Auge, das von einem schwarzen Ring umgeben ist. Der Kopf zeigt das cremeweiße bis gelbliche Gefieder der Art.

Zwei Basstölpel führen eine Balzgeste aus, bei der sie ihre langen Schnäbel nach oben strecken und aneinander legen. Die Vögel mit ihrem weißen Gefieder und den charakteristischen gelblichen Köpfen stehen auf rotbraunem Fels am Wasser. Im Hintergrund ist das dunkelblaue Meer zu sehen.

Eine Gruppe von Basstölpeln auf einem Felsvorsprung, teilweise mit ausgebreiteten Flügeln. Im Zentrum streiten zwei Vögel mit weit geöffneten Schnäbeln miteinander. Das weiße Gefieder kontrastiert mit den schwarzen Flügelspitzen und dem dunkelblau schimmernden Meer im Hintergrund.

Ein Basstölpel im Flug mit voll ausgebreiteten Flügeln gegen einen bewölkten Himmel. Die charakteristischen schwarzen Flügelspitzen sind deutlich sichtbar, während der Vogel mit ausgestrecktem Hals und Schnabel gleitet. Im Schnabel trägt er ein paar weiße Federn.

Northern Gannets are just so damn beautiful. Even if I like their colors sometimes in contrasty black'n'white this bird comes out even better :)
