Today in Labor History August 24, 1945: LGBTQ activist Marsha P. Johnson was born. She was one of the central players in the Stonewall Uprising of 1969. She was also founding member of the Gay Liberation Front and co-founded the radical activist group Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries . Johnson was also an insider in New York's art scene, modeling for Andy Warhol, and performing with the drag group Hot Peaches. Some referred to her as the "mayor of Christopher Street" for her warm presence in Greenwich Village. From 1987 through 1992, she was active with ACT UP. When asked what the ”P” stood for in her name, or asked about her gender, she’d say the “P” stood for “pay-it-no-mind.” She died in 1992, likely from a transphobic attack.

Today's archival work: helping to create the finding aid for recordings tied to Australian gay lib/gay rights movements (late 70s to mid-80s). These tapes are radio programs recording conference plenaries, poetry readings, debates, radio plays and performances.

(Downside: I emerged covered in mold spores- not all tapes are in great condition).

Three piles of recording tapes: one pile at the back has a piece of yellowed paper reading "gay liberation" on it. Another pile to the side is a stack of 8-tracks. The pile in focus is a stack of blue boxes with EMITAPE written on them in yellow letters. A note on top reads: 3CR temp logging tape, not to be erased until 1/1/81. It shows that the program was taped in 1980, 19-20 November. A clear recording tape sticks out from underneath this pile.

#ClassWarfare must only play a role in the fight for liberation. #TransLiberation, #GayLiberation, liberation of all peoples facing a multitude of issues outside of class must take place if we are to build a better, fairer #society.
