@DaObjector @Koochulainn Some Irish political hashtags are #irpol, and recently #GE2024 #GE24, #IrelandVotes. Search for posts with those and follow people who use them should help your timeline feel a little less lonely.

I realised I've been remiss in sharing here, so in case anyone's looking for some #Seanad2025 guidance, I've got a spreadsheet going with candidates from both panels and their positions on some major issues.

Thanks for the 30c ReTurn Lorraine, maybe you’ll get the Seanad as consolation. #ge24 #ge2024 #irishelection

It's kinda impressive that we don't even have the new government yet and already we know they were lying through their teeth to the tune of €2bn.

Also, so nice to see IFAC pointing this out now, with the #GE24 election over and us relegated to sitting there impotent to affect it in any way,in the best tradition of Irish governance through the ages.

Oh bless! I see our fashy far right brethren are all fighting like rats in a sack since they were unceremoniously given the heave ho by the Irish electorate. 😂😂😂

Looking at the election data and the question of ballot position, I discover the FG and FF candidate surnames come significantly earlier in the alphabet, on average, than other parties.

Practically 30% of their candidates have names in the A-C range, vs 23.5% overall.

SF and independents are fairly low too.

I really can't think why this might be.

Electoral Register could be off by 500,000 voters. This would mean that instead of the poor 60% turnout recorded in #GE24, a more accurate figure would be closer to 70% turnout.

(BTW the official turnout figure excludes spoilt votes, I don't agree with this omission. In some cases those spoilt votes are no fault of the voter, e.g. failure to stamp ballot paper, in other cases the vote has been deliberately spoiled to make a political point.)

The Limerick City ballot paper had a small problem with alphabetical order (Qs came before Os) and non-elected candidates were moaning.

That got me thinking: what evidence is there that ballot-order has an effect.

I needed data: Wikipedia has it for all constituencies, even for 2024 (mostly) and a lot of other years.

I used Julia to mass-download, and Emacs to massage the data into something analysable.

A little tricky identifying surnames (with Ó and Mac and double-barrels)!

I saw an Instagram post this morning asking what music each party leader was listening to during #GE24 and the answers are...well:

Micheál Martin: Simon & Garfunkel, Neil Diamond, Pavarotti
Simon Harris: Coldplay, Oasis
Mary Lou McDonald: Alison Moyet
Ivana Bacik: Sinéad O'Connor, Julie Feeney, Everything But The Girl
Roderic O'Gorman: Sigur Rós
Richard Boyd Barrett: Ska/Punk/Reggae, Christy Moore
Cian O'Callaghan: Damien Dempsey
Michael Collins: Springsteen, Bryan Adams
Peadar Tóibín: Pixies

So yes, build a strong left alliance, but also get that alliance in to a position where it can implement its policies. It won't achieve much on the opposition benches.

Labour and the SocDems may fear being punished if they enter into government with FF/FG now, but they risk being punished to an even greater extent if they refuse the opportunity to deliver on the environment policies that were so lauded during the election campaign. And in the end, we will all suffer if we don't take climate action seriously.

Given their rejection of key commitments on sustainable transport and clean energy at the last cabinet meeting, when they no longer relied on Green support, there is very little hope that Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael can be trusted to follow through on the kind of action that is needed to tackle climate change and biodiversity loss.

I've been thinking about the idea that Labour & SocDems might eschew government this time around in order to build a strong centre left alliance ahead of the next General Election.

That might be the politically sensible thing to do but climate change and biodiversity loss isn't going to just hold off for another five years until it is more politically expedient for Labour and the SocDems to enter government.
