I've been trying to expand from speech recognition to image processing. Clearly, what the world needs is a geared steam locomotive classifier!

Sample images from here: https://www.gearedsteam.com/ (a great site which has been around since 1998 and is still growing).

I'm OK with Willammettes being misclassified as Shays since they are basically Shay clones.

this table shows that geared steam engine pictures were correctly classified 81% of the time. not quite as impressive as it sounds since the data is quite skewed; Shays are much more frequent than the other types. an early version of the model always guessed "Shay" and was correct 56% of the time. the second and third most frequent types are "Climax" and "Heisler", and these are correctly identified 85% and 81% of the time. none of the other minor types were ever correctly identified but they show up rarely. and like I said the Willammette->Shay confusion is pretty reasonable.
