Norwegian blues 1/3

As a kid, I'd go to Norway regularly. Before our westerly brethren struck oil and got -- and stayed! good job, you guys! -- filthy rich, Swedes would cross the border to buy sugar, flour, butter, syrup, and the like. One person = one ration, so people would cram their little cars full of kids, and the occasional cat, and stock up on these essential foodstuffs. Most people weren't all that well off in those days, so it wasn't just for the nice outing. You were skimping any way you could.

Since then, Norway has been insanely expensive for Swedes. My trips there as an adult have been few and brief. Lately, though, the two neighbouring currencies are kinda seeing eye to eye, so we decided to FINALLY make a trip. Yay!

We spent 2.5 weeks in Norway this summer, meaning I have a lot of pictures of beautiful landscapes and pituresque cities. So stay tuned for more.

This is in Geiranger, a stunning place - especially when no cruise ship is disturbing the scenery. But I'm posting this one as first picture due to today's #FotoVorschlag topic "Schifffahrt".)

The picture shows a landscape scenery of the Geiranger fjord. In the background there are green mountains, partly with the last bits of snow covering their tops. The sky is blue with some light white clouds. In the middle, a white cruise ship is visible, which has just arrived in Geiranger.

A combination #SchiffsSamstag and #FotoVorschlag today with its theme of "Schifffahrt" or shipping or ship-related.

Our view in 2013 from a tender boat departing Crown Princess (left) with P&O Adonia in the background at Geiranger, Norway. We went on a hike up behind a waterfall on this day.

We're in a fjord on a bright, sunny, warm day. Our view is from aboard a tender boat, a small boat used to ferry passengers from cruise ships to land and back again, and we're sitting up on top so we've got uninterrupted views across the flat surface of the water. We're looking back to the cruise ship that we've recently departed from. It's all in white and facing slightly towards us with its prow angled over our right shoulder. A split around the ridge of the prow shows off the area in which there is a promenade deck wrapping around the ship and down the left side as we look we can see lifeboats mounted at the same height. The bridge with its wide wings at the upper front of the ship resembles a visor and the overall look is a little like a great, white, metal dolphin or whale on the water. To the left, just beside the ship are two more tender boats, white and orange, small in scale against the ship. To the right, further back, there is another cruise ship; a smaller white one pointing to the left, with a pale orange funnel. The background under the deep blue sky and puffy white clouds comprises of steep rising hills, mostly green with grass and trees, with some more mountainous rises to the rear and some houses visible near the fjord shoreline to the left and right.

Our excursion in Geiranger in 2013 - our first ever cruise excursion in Norway - was a hike to a waterfall. We'd guessed that a tour marked as "strenuous" really meant "strenuous for cruise passengers" and that we'd be okay given our relative young age. Oh, boy were we wrong. It was hard work and we trailed behind the older but far fitter passengers on the hike. One other couple gave up, turned around, and went back to the ship, but we persevered and were rewarded with stunning views and a lovely experience walking behind the waterfall up the mountain.

I bought a cheap graduated filter for my camera and used it on this trip, thinking it would make sense with bright skies and dark rock to photograph. Good idea in theory. Graduated filters work fine with level territory but not so well with lots of jagged peaks to cope with. The results were not ideal and the cheap filter gave all the blues a purple tone that required a lot of processing to get to something good enough to post.

It's a bright day with patchy sheets of thin cloud in the sky. We're on the slope of a hill that rises to our right and we're at a high elevation already. The ground is bumpy with plenty of grass but also lots of exposed pale rock and boulders, green-leafed bushes growing sporadically, and a couple of thin-trunked trees uppermost on our right. The rocky ground provides a little bit of a path partly lost in the grass but identified by the line of hikers making their way along it. We're part of the hiking group, trailing behind by half a dozen metres for the photo. These are people of all ages, all in short sleeves from the heat of the exertion, many with backpacks. The path they're on rises slowly to the right and out of view behind the slope of the hilly ground and trees. To the left there is a view under the sky of a mountainous hill of rock with fairly sheer front and patches of light greenery on its surface visible from this distance. We can surmise that we're climbing up one side of rocky landscape either side of a valley.
