#gelplateprinting

I've been playing with adding black ink and watercolour paints on a gelplate and then quickly putting watercolor paper on and off. It's given me some interesting pieces to work on, and possibly some absolute failures. But that's what play is all about. Knickers to perfection

I’m seeing invasive dog-strangling vine pop up around my neighbourhood. Now’s a great time to get rid of it… long before it goes to seed or starves monarch butterfly caterpillars who thought they were safely on milkweed. Join my anti-dog-strangling vine vendetta on behalf of the monarchs?

Summer is a good time to remove it. Look for the lance-shaped leaves, green stem that twists around 🧵1/n

A print on 11” x 14” paper with a gel plate print in green with swirling dog-strangling vine with leaves and pods along with a flying linocut monarch butterfly in tints of orange, white and black. The monarch looks surrounded and the intent is for the green and the vine to look threatening like it is being encircled. It’s titled “European swallowwort and monarch butterfly,” signed Ele Willoughby and dated 2024.

I have made some art, like this monoprint, about some of the many folk traditions around May Day. May Eve is celebrated with bonfires for Walpurgisnacht and Hexennacht (Walpurgis night and Witches’ Night as celebrated in Germany). May Eve is the feast day of Saint Walpurga in celebration of her canonization May 1, 870. But folklorists tie it to a more ancient celebration 🧵

For the #Spacetober prompt astronomical object: a mono print built up with layers of ink on a gel plate of a Super Massive Blackholes (SMBH) with relativistic jets.

My mono print built up with layers of ink on a gel plate of a Super Massive Blackhole (SMBH) with relativistic jets. It looks like a very dark black half-sphere with flattened bulge under it, surrounded by swirling reds and oranges in a wide ring, with two pale blue narrow cones going up and down (the jets) against the black of space.

For the #SciArtSeptember prompt cursed - monarch butterflies who are fooled into laying eggs on the invasive dog-strangling vine (European swallowwort, Vincetoxicum rossicum) due to its similarities to its host plant milkweed are cursed to hatch larvae which starve and die. Dog-strangling vine unlike milkweed doesn’t serve as a food source for the caterpillars, 🧵1/

This print is my response to seeing invasive dog-strangling vine (European swallowwort, Vincetoxicum rossicum) popping up all over my neighbourhood. Not only do these plants create dense stands that outcompete native plants but they threaten the monarch butterfly which depends on milkweed and are fooled by similarities between the two into mistakenly laying eggs on dog-strangling vine 🧵

And now we have whales! Added my humpbacks to the background colours. Next up: whale barnacles C. diadema for #InsertAnInvert2024

#linocut #printmaking #gelPlatePrinting #sciArt #humpbackWhale #barnacle #wip #MastoArt

Prints laid out on a table with green cutting mat to dry. Parts of 4 square, 8” x 8” prints on white washi paper can be seen. The upper two thirds are printed as a deep blue-green rectangle with missing unprinted white silhouette of a humpback whale now filled with a linocut print of the humpback in dark blue-grey. The bottom third is a grey rectangle with the missing silhouettes of 6 barnacles unprinted in white.

The rest of the background is now printed. If you haven’t guessed yet, this print will be a humpback whale & a cluster of whale barnacles (C. diadema) for #InsertAnInvert2024. Amazingly it seems these 2 have a mutually beneficial relationship. The barnacles have a host swim them around so they can filter feed. The whale gets a bit of hard armour which they can use to inflict more damage in mating battles!

Another print in progress. Though this is clearly the ocean surrounding a mammal (a humpback whale), this is another print for #InsertAnInvert2024. The humpback won’t be the only animal depicted. But first: the ocean. I wanted to get the depth of colour just right.

More circles! Still drying prints on the floor. 2 layers with stencils and the gel plate down, 8 Lino block layers yet to print.

#printmaking #gelPlatePrinting #linocut #wip #sciart #mathArt #circles #MastoArt

Two prints drying on the floor carpet. Each print is on white kozo paper, 30 cm by 40 cm and is printed in a gradient of orange to paler yellow-orange. The prints show a large section of a circle on the upper left through a smattering of smaller circles of various sizes trending to the lower right. Now it its second stage the prints show overlapping circles.

Between the number of blocks, the jig, the cut stencils and gel plate for this upcoming print, I ran out of table space and had to dry prints on the floor.

Some recent #gelplate prints that I quite like, even if not perfect. The goal was just to play with pics from my photo stash when I needed a break from another project.

I think I'm starting to get the hang of transfers, and at the very least these are giving me ideas for future print sessions (besides having fun with the process).

#gelplatePrinting #MastoArt

Gel plate print of two storks standing on a nest on a pole, positioned in the bottom left corner, printed as a black silhouette against a blue and reddish brown background. The stork on the right seems to be looking at something to the right. I like the colors in this one, though a bit muted and dark.Same storks printed as a black silhouette, but now with a mottled but slightly bright yellow background, and the nest is placed in the bottom right corner of the print. I like how the different colors and composition put more emphasis on light in this print.A composite of transfers with a corvid and grasses. The bird is seen on the back and looking up to the right. With an lighter semi-transparant overlay of enlarged grasses it almost seems to be in another world. The print is mostly black, greenish-grey and yellowish-white, with a deep yellow bar on the right where my gel plate was larger than the paper that held the photo of the bird. This wasn't a planned print, I just needed to offload paint and use up laserprints, but for some reason I like it.A simple transfer of a very old lady duck that I still remember fondly. Just black and white with some brown undertones and "noise" from the plate. Didn't think it needed anything else. Happy with how the details in the feathers transferred in this one, and the interaction with the grainy noise from the plate.

It's just a simple print, but the more I look at it, the happier it makes me. Still miss her.

#gelplatePrinting

Gel plate print in a sketchbook depicting a black and white cat staring at something on the floor in front of her (used to be a fly in the original picture). She's positioned more or less in the bottom left corner, surrounded by an off-white background with smudges and other "noise" that comes with gel plate printing.

Next up for #printerSolstice @printersolstice is CMYK so I got out my process cyan, magenta, yellow and black ink and started experimenting with the gel plate. The first is my favourite, made with cut paper stencils and patterned Japanese tissue paper. I also used some carved Lino blocks and plant materials on the other prints.

I've gotten a little into photographing some of the gel plate prints I've made and combining them using photo editing and... oh my. I'm liking this a lot.

#gelplateprinting #photoedits #art

Abstract art with an impression of a cassette tape in the middle over a cream background with teal hexagons and a dark blueish green grungy border.

One of the reasons I create art is because there is no easy way to put into words the pain and anguish that come with mental illness, but those feelings can be channeled, often in very small moments, into creating something beautiful and worthwhile.

In a world seemingly full of darkness and pain, be excellent to each other, folks. You never know when your kindness and care is actually saving somebody's life.

Abstract gel plate print, random smears of paint in teal, blue and copper with textures including dots and bubble wrap.

I've been doing a bit of mark making style art on the gel plate the past few days and it's been really nurturing my inner child at a time where things in my life have been feeling pretty dark and dismal. I cut up one of the pages I made and mounted them to some small canvas board.
