Thank you for hosting ... and all good vibes for the transfer. Of the transfers I've witnessed all have gone smoothly ... tho I suspect I wouldn't necessarily be aware if they hadn't :((

A special thank you to @system for hosting this platform for #genchat for the past 2.5 years. I'm so grateful we had a place to go when things looked uncertain at the bird site for a while! I look forward to our new Mastodonian home! @genchat@a.gup.pe
Well, we have come to the end of another #genchat on Mastodon, and the last one where I'm tooting from lor . sh. I'll be working on the transition to genealysis . social this weekend. But our next #genchat will definitely be on June 14, about Effectively Using Finding Aids. Stay tuned & I'll keep you posted on my migration progress! Thanks for all your thoughts today! @genchat@a.gup.pe
@chrisvaniersel Thanks.
I must dig deeper into it.
@bethroots @BRMiller @genchat@a.gup.pe I get the concept, but personally I use BackBlaze to backup my computer, which works really well. I don't need OneDrive too. #genchat
@genchat@lor.sh @BRMiller @genchat@a.gup.pe OneDrive at work totally messed my file management up. I'm not a fan.

I appreciate that! To do otherwise might be viewed, by others, as hypocritical of me because, ummm, I do it too.

I wanted away from relying on large corporates who are stealing my data & using it to train AI. I don't necessarily subscribe to the conspiracy theories, but my data is mine and I want to chose who/how.
Linux is Open source, as are most of the apps. Which means they are open to public scrutiny on exactly what data they are using.
It also runs well on older hardware so your PC/laptop does not start to slow down after two years on Windows, forcing you to upgrade.
@RobertJackson58585858 The skeleton trees might provide useful information to someone. I have a few out there.

@RobertJackson58585858 @genchat
I think it's a good idea to give those recent generations for people doing descendancy tracing.
But yeah, too many trees gets to be a pain to try to update. #genchat
@BRMiller @genchat@lor.sh @genchat@a.gup.pe The other thing is having to buy new hardware, having to use a Microsoft login and having ads pushed at you. I am not updating to Windows 11 for those reasons. My W10 laptop was expensive and I am not buying a new one. I'm tired of the M$ money grab. With Windows 10 coming off support later this year, I'm done. /rant
#genchat
@RobertJackson58585858 You never know who may be looking at your trees! #genchat @genchat@a.gup.pe
@BRMiller @genchat@a.gup.pe Yeah, I have to say I hate having OneDrive forced down my throat. It really screwed up how Legacy was saving things. Though I think I do have it under control now. #genchat
Speaking of mourning software. I really wanted to use The Master Genealogist (TMG), but it is another one that has gone by the wayside. I had started a project with it about the time the creator dropped it.
#genchat
Trying not to digress too much, I have skeleton trees (back to ggps) on My Heritage, Gedmarch and Find my past. I don't ever add to them. I don't think they've proved of any benefit ... but who am I to say?
@genchat@lor.sh @genchat@a.gup.pe
The security has been compounded by the AI in Windows. I keep having to go into settings and turn off things that get "updated" and then attempting to uninstall them. #genchat
Just out of curiosity, what is driving some of your walking away from Windows? Is it a security thing, an AI thing, or something else? #genchat @genchat@a.gup.pe
@bethroots I still have Windows partition and can dual boot -- the only time I ever jump into Windows is for a Teams call.
I work for myself and have to join Teams calls. There is a web version of Teams but it has limitations.
