Why is it "gay men act feminine and lesbians act masculine" instead of "straight people are too afraid to break gender norms so they follow some random rules about how to behave"

Growing up, I could only wear dresses. My mother went ballistic when I even wore anything fitted. So, long hair and dresses it was. I guess that is why I sometimes like to wear somewhat masculine clothing. Not sure why, but I like playing with #gendernorms. I even have short hair now.
Other times I do like wearing dresses, I just like to feel a little subversive sometimes.
Does that even make sense?
I guess the message here is, just be you. When able, don't let other people control your life.☺️

A safer scene: Transforming masculinity for the better of all

In what ways do traditional gender norms continue to influence & do damage to us and our scenes? How can we do better and what would we need for that?

MenSEN is an Amsterdam based collective that hosts sessions focused on transforming gender and masculinity. They are open to all genders, but have an extra focus on including people who've internalized masculinity in the struggle for healthier gender relations.

Patriarkraakt is an Utrecht based collective that does the same, but does workshops that are generally open only to people who feel they have internalized masculinity.

Two neighbourhood girls asked me why my hair was short, so I asked them why theirs was long. Their response? "It's natural for girls hair to be long"
Gender norms are so ingrained, it's sad. And, more personally, I'm not going to be seen as anything other than a she round here.

An actual English test for a German class. The task reads: “Read the text again. Who do you think wrote it? Is it a boy or a girl? Explain your decision by referring to specific points in the text.
I think it’s a boy /it’s a girl, because…”

The handwritten answer of the student reads: “I have no idea if it’s a boy or a girl. And there are no arguments for one side, because every girl and every boy writes differently, because we are all different people with different characters, so why should I decide on a gender group? Maybe it’s neither a girl nor a boy. And I know I write “he” but that was just a reflex (a bad reflex). Especially in an exam or in normal class we should not tell people that there are typical gender roles or that a girl writes likes this and a boy like that. I hope you understand me, because I really can’t find arguments for one side and I also don’t want to.
