Prompt: Black on black.

(I deliberately skipped Prompt 3, "Exactly 42 lines of code." which seemed both too constricting and not constricting enough.)

"Black on black."

Five rows of vertical rectangles all in shades of gray.

Prompt: Black on black. This is a variation of Dwitter's default program, which has nine black rectangles oscillating horizontally on a white background. In this variant, there's a faint gray outline on each rectangle. dwitter.net/d/33031 #Genuary #Genuary2025 #Genuary4

A mostly black picture. A row of nine rectangular outlines can be seen, faintly in dark gray, in the middle. Dimensions are the same for each rectangle, with height greater than width.

Chances on it even being visible once compressed?

'Black on Black.'

Submitted my tax return! So here's a quick Genuary sketch to celebrate. This is today (isometric) plus a catch-up on day 4 (black-on-black) and day 2 (layers).

It's thousands of partially transparent, shiny black cubes drawn (or not) according to a 4D noise function, in an isometric projection and surrounded by 10 rotating point lights in different colours that produce the specular reflections.

#Genuary4 prompt:
Black On Black
openprocessing.org/sketch/2500

I didn't really want to do something too dark, and I recalled how crows are pure black but have some iridescence in their feathers. Then a photographer I follow, @studiochris serendipitously posted a great photo of a crow (sfba.social/@studiochris/11377), so I had to try making a generative system from it. It's still pretty abstracted, but it has some fun details.

The feathers are laid out on a grid which is shifted slightly to better resemble a wing when it is tucked up. The feathers are all fairly uniform, and are based around a rectangle with rounded ends. Each feather is constructed of many smaller rectangles to represent each barbule. These smaller rectangles are clipped by the larger rounded rectangle. The base color palette was sampled from Chris Price's photo. Each feather has a color selected based on an underlying modulus pattern of the x and y positions in the grid, which can be varied from run to run. Each feather is also rotated on a smooth noise field, and has the width and height slightly jittered. Each barbule also has smooth noise rotation, and x/y jitter, as well as a slight color jitter. The feather array reminded me of storm clouds, so I titled this piece "Crow Feather Clouds".

"Black on black"

Revisiting one of my earliest sketches. Nothing but ellipses here. I like the way it resembles an old, worn chalkboard.

A black background with a large number of very thin faint ellipses. Mixed in are a much smaller number of thicker black ellipses.

#genuary4 : Black on Black

I need to fix my line end-caps. I usually intend to plot the drawings created with this setup and haven't bothered to fix them.

I want to plot them after I'm done with #GENUARY but I am also starting to work with colors more than before 😅

"Black on black"

It took me a while to come up with a different meaning for the prompt. I find it interesting how any ideas I came up with someone else had already done.

So in the end, I recycled this sketch and dressed the main characters for the occasion 🙂

Code: codeberg.org/hamoid/genuary202

The code is a bit longer than planned because I added noise to the gradient so the video looks less terrible.
