We talk a lot about #sea level rise due to #warming and ice melt. That it's not just based on models. We have a robust #geological record of ice melt events to talk about this with relative confidence*.

Peak global mean temperature, atmospheric CO2, maximum global mean sea level (GMSL), and source(s) of meltwater.
Light blue shading indicates uncertainty of GMSL maximum. Red pie charts over Greenland and Antarctica denote fraction (not location) of ice retreat.

Some of the beach rocks I've recently collected to add to our gardens. Soaking out the saltwater in a bucket.

Overhead shot of a yellow bucket containing small, rough-edged rocks submerged in water. The rocks vary in color, ranging from white and beige to gray and brown. Several rocks show traces of green moss. The water's surface reflects the light, adding a shimmering effect to the scene.

How did eastern #NorthAmerica form?
North America today is made of several different parts. The west are relatively young and mighty mountain ranges like Sierra Nevada and Rockies. In the middle is ancient heart of the continent, oldest and stablest rocks around. And in the east is the long coastal stretch of the eastern North American margin. Each of these has its own #geological history, but it is the story of the eastern bit that has recently come into sharper focus.

Day eleven: ☢️💧

“About 90% of the #nuclear generation capacity the #Coalition proposes to build would not have access to enough water to run safely, according to a report commissioned by #LiberalsAgainstNuclear.

The report authored by Prof. #AndrewCampbell, a visiting fellow at the Australian National University (#ANU) , assessed nuclear energy’s #water needs and the available #supply across the seven sites where the Coalition has proposed new reactors.”

“Well done Angus”

If you remember the member for #Hume is insisting the Federal Government if the #LNP wins election will purchase, run and make a profit using nuclear power.

No mention of locations of power generation sites (I assume existing sites) nor is there any mention of #geological, #enviromental or #NuclearWaste disposal studies.

Lake Greenhow: A Forgotten Relic of the Ice Age

Yesterday’s post led me to glaciers, glacial lakes, and the like. At Botton Head, my imagination ran riot.

Difficult as it is to picture now, 10,000 years ago, a glacier covered the Tees Valley before me. The ice sheet, it is well-known, never quite managed to smother the Nor ...

Newtondale: A Gorge Too Big for Its Stream

North Dale sits at the top end of Newtondale, a gorge that stretches all the way to Pickering. Newtondale is an oddity, or so everyone says, because the little Pickering Beck, which now trickles through it, could never have gouged out such a deep, narrow valley. At its tightest points, the valley is only 500 met ...

The Chikanishing Trail, Killarney Provincial Park Ontario Canada was a rough, rugged trail over rocky terrain and the odd rickety, weathered wooden bridge or boardwalk. The fall foliage was stunning especially with the pink granite. Click link to view for #FreeShipping North America on #wallart

Just took 1 hour to make this video while I just wanted to say: big bisou @dramaterialism for having written this big book, to Tais B Terletskaja for joining me into translating it på dansk, to @lab_aesthetics_and_ecology for believing in it and to @massiaofficinale for hosting the translating session. I love the illustrations @nelloid made and how things came together graphically thanks to Malte and Maria.
Cosy book reception for the second birth of the book at @detlillarum . That soup I served with pickled wilds from last spring was happy to display its generosity. Team work +++

#MonochromeMonday

We have these amazing karst canyons all over the island & on several surrounding gulf islands. Large karst networks of caves & canyons are found in Cowichan Valley, Comox Valley & all through the less populated North Island. Karst sites on Quadra Island & some islands in the Discovery Islands archipelago are being researched. Haida Gwaii has big karst formations network.

I find #geological #karst formations very fascinating. I enjoy exploring them when there's an opportunity to do so. I've found ancient old growth tree crystals in some of the karst formation forests here - they're magical, magnificent & hard to find if you're not looking hard in the right areas.

A series of 7 smooth, multicolored rocks, displaying shades of gray, green, brown & orange, placed on driftwood log. The driftwood exhibits a textured surface with visible cracks, while the stones are positioned in a straight line from top to bottom. The background consists of an assortment of rounded pebbles in varying sizes & colors, providing a natural coastal setting.

Not all planets are like ours. I don't just mean the water and life, I also mean the surface process. You look at a high-resolution #geological of #Mars (like this one by Fawdon et al.), and you see stories you won't see on modern #Earth.
For one, it's very old (>2 Billion years). There are also many impact craters, but there is also fractures indicating a complex stress field, fossilized fluvial channel... that is a frozen system vs. the extremely dynamic ones we have here now.

The map of rock units and correlation of map units. The 1:150,000 scale map of bedrock units from the main map and the correlation of map units (Skinner et al., 2022). The timing of events is drawn from the contextual geological literature and the timing of other events in the region. Coloured bars represent the time in which these events are likely to have occurred, and not representative to their duration. We have not derived impact crater size frequency distribution model ages of for map units because, following the discussion in Sun and Stack (2020), these techniques is not an appropriate technique for units of this size and in this complex state of erosion/exhumation (e.g. Warner et al., 2015).

Interesting #bedrock #geological formations can be found on many beaches on the Eastcoast of Vancouver Island & surrounding Gulf Islands. A prehistoric mix of coal, shale & sandstone.

A photos collage of two sections of a rocky shoreline. On the left, smooth, oval pebbles of different colors (beige, gray, green) are scattered across dark, rippled bedrock. On the right, larger, irregularly shaped boulders with a rugged texture are more visibly clustered together against the exposed sedimentary rock. The composition illustrates the transitional landscape between the water & land, highlighting the geological features & varying rock sizes.
