In "Boplicity" e negli altri brani di "Birth of the Cool" gli assoli sono quasi marginali, quello che conta è il collettivo. L'opposto di quel che succede in un tipico quartetto bebop.

Claude Thornhill (August 10, 1908 – July 1, 1965)[1] was an American pianist, arranger, composer, and bandleader. He composed the jazz and pop standards "Snowfall" and "I Wish I Had You".

...In 1939, he founded the Claude Thornhill Orchestra. Polo was his lead clarinet player. Although the Thornhill band was a sophisticated dance band, it became known for its superior jazz musicians and for Thornhill's and Gil Evans's arrangements. The band played without vibrato, so that the timbres of the instruments could be better appreciated. Thornhill encouraged the musicians to develop cool-sounding tones. The band was popular with both musicians and the public. Miles Davis's Birth of the Cool nonet was modeled in part on Thornhill's sound and unconventional instrumentation. The band's most successful records were "Snowfall", "A Sunday Kind of Love", and "Love for Love". .. - Wikipedia

Welcomed sleep and greeted Thor's day after my swim with Guitar Forms a 1965 album by Kenny Burrell, featuring arrangements by Gil Evans. Evans' orchestra appears on five of the album's nine tracks.

Guitar Forms Review by Richard Mortifoglio

...Witness his landmark 1965 collaboration with Gil Evans, Guitar Forms, which rivals anything the arranger did with Miles Davis. Indeed, the track "Lotus Land" has a bolero form very reminiscent of Sketches of Spain. There is no stinting on the blues here, either, as evidenced on "Downstairs" and "Terrace Theme." But the highlights are the bossa nova version of Alec Wilder's "Moon and Sand," as well as a characteristically slow and luxurious treatment of Harold Arlen's "Last Night When We Were Young." Throughout, Burrell takes thoughtful, concise, and utterly musical solos, and even switches to acoustic classical guitar on "Prelude #2" and "Loie."

"So What" is the first track on the 1959 album #KindOfBlue by American trumpeter #MilesDavis. It is one of the best-known examples of #modalJazz, set in the #DorianMode and consisting of 16 bars of D Dorian, followed by eight bars of E♭ Dorian and another eight of D Dorian. This #AABA structure puts it in the #thirtytwobarFormat of American popular song. The piano-and-bass introduction for the piece was written by #GilEvans for #BillEvans (no relation).

Severance and Gil Evans: has anybody noticed the parallels between Shapiro's theme song for Severance and Gil Evans' arrangement of My Ship from 1957?
Both use chords over a C pedal, both top voices move downwards chromatically.

😂 I'd not heard this tune before. It's excellent. Especially the lyrics.

"Lots of hungry, homeless children in your own backyards
While you're very, very busy addressing
Twenty zillion Christmas cards
Now, Yuletide is the season to receive and oh, to give and ah, to share
But all you December do-gooders rush around and rant and rave and loudly blare"

Decided to revisit the classics. So I started the evening with Disc 1 of All of You. Went from there to the Gil Evans Orchestra. Then Sketches of Spain. Realised I only had time for one more before bed despite wanting to hear both A Love Supreme and Kind of Blue.

Flipped a coin, and Kind of Blue it was. Definitely a better fit for a 2am listen, so I'm happy enough.

Album cover. on the left it reads: The Miles Davis Quintet (featuring John Coltrane). All of You: The Last Tour, 1960. The right side of the cover is taken up by a close up black and white photo of Miles Davis' face. He holds a cigarette a few centimetres from his lips.Cover of the classic 1961 jazz record, Out of The Cool by the Gil Evans Orchestra. A man sits on a stool side-on to the camera but looking over his shoulder towards it. He holds sheets of music in his hands. There is a sheet of paper between him and the camera but he can be seen through a hole ripped in that paper. The entire scene has a red tint.Album cover. The top half of the cover has a yellow / orange background and the bottom has a red background reminiscent of the colours of the Spanish flag. Above the album title, overlapping both backgrounds, in large black letters it simply reads "MILES". Below that is the title, Sketches of Spain. And below that it says "arranged and conducted by Gil Evans". To the left is painted a silhouette of a trumpet player. To the right in the same style is a Spanish bull. The record label logo (Columbia) is in the top right, and the word "Stereo" emblazoned across the top.A photograph of Miles Davis playing his trumpet dominates this album cover. At the top in big letters it says Miles Davis. Next to his name is the album title, Kind of Blue. Below the title is a list of the other musicians on the record. Julian "Cannonball" Adderly, Paul Chambers, James Cobb, John Coltrane, Bill Evans, Wynton Kelly.

Some days I wonder if I'm reallt a jazzhead or not.

Then I have moments just like one now. I knew Gil Evans arranged a track solely by the wind section.

Huh. Guess I am a jazzhead.

Morning, the rain has broken, hot coffee to hand & #NowPlaying #SketchesOfSpain for the second time in a row. I love #MilesDavis with #GilEvans. Between this and #PorgyandBess, this wins out. #Saeta is quite unlike anything else I can bring to mind - that soulful horn, with the weird drone deep in the background then breaking into a march… Evocative stuff.

This is the #MobileFidelity 33, the best version I’ve heard by a country mile.

The cover is painting of the silhouette of a trumpet player stood on the red earth, profiled again a bright yellow sky. Horn to lips, the trumpet player is facing down a bull who is begin his charge.

Black lettering reads, Miles, Sketches of Spain, arranged and conducted by Gil Evans.

The banner spanning the top margin reads, Original Master Recording.Photo of a record spinning on the skeletal frame of a Rega P8.

The centre label, dark grey - charcoal, reads, Miles Davis, Sketches of Spain, in pale grey type, just above the spindle.

The tone arm, red cartridge, traces the opening track.
