While attending that repatriation ceremony at Charité on January 16, I thought I‘d write about the truly moving ceremony, cite from those touching speeches, and that I’d tell more about the 12 Hehe ancestors whose remains were (supposed to be) repatriated. 1/

My latest (in German) at @riffreporter :

Decolonial initiatives lose project room and exhibition space in Berlin’s Wilhelmstraße 92, which is about where in 1884/85 the Berlin Africa Conference took place. Now the decolonial initiatives can no longer rent that room. The lease will not be renewed.

In the same context, this afternoon Amani Abeid, an artist who is part of “Histories of Tanzania” told me: “The museums should extend the capacities of spreading the knowledge about histories - not only in Tanzania but throughout the world. The new generation, they have their spaces.”

With Nicholas Calvin Mwakatobe, an artist is part of both VINYAGO and “Histories of Tanzania”. Also, the documentary film about VINYAGO was shown as part of this weekend’s accompanying program.

Here, a famous scene about Tanzania’s young generation.

While thinking about omissions, I’ve been thinking of Mnyaka Sururu Mboro. A key diaspora person in decolonizing TZ-GER colonial legacy. And someone whose voice was to be heard in VINYAGO.

Big respect to the community representatives who have come to Humboldt Forum - not just any space. And the two panels with them yesterday - wow.

And I feel grateful for each conversation. Here, with Chief Adam Mkwawa.

While listening to the panels at Humboldt Forum this weekend, I’ve also been reminded of the talks after the VINYAGO performances at Humboldt Forum in 2022.

What is the state of Tanzanian-German colonial legacy?

These days, with “Histories of Tanzania” now open at Humboldt Forum, I’ve been thinking a lot of when two years back, VINYAGO was there, co-curated by Isack Abeneko, Nicholas Calvin Mwakatobe and Gita Herrmann.

As I’m on my my way to #DinoInTheRoom - a civil society dialogue @BoellStiftung on German colonial history in Tanzania - I’m thinking of @MarcoTibasima and my 2020 dinosaur drawing, part of #gjheritagewalks .

A white woman with a face mask in a hall looking up at the mounted skeleton of a tall dinosaur. A thinking bubble, there: the woman and a Black man sitting, in the background the skeleton surrounded by palms, a big tree, an ancient building.

Berlin: The renaming of Petersallee into Maji-Maji-Allee to come. Contestation dismissed. (1/2)

(Drawing from 2020 when Tanzanian artist @MarcoTibasima & I did our #gjheritagewalks remotely: me walking, Marco drawing.
In 2022 the renaming into Manga-Bell-Platz was completed)

A woman standing at a crossing in front of street signs with names: “Nachtigalplatz” and “Petersallee”. In her hand a phone and a map app open. There, different street names: “Manga-Bell-Platz” and “Maji-Maji-Allee”. In the background an ambulance.

(No picture). And sometimes it’s the pictures we do not take which tell a story - and more than one story. And the danger of the single story is always there. We see, we listen, we learn, we fact-check.

At NCA.
