November 2025

Denn die einen sind im Dunkeln
Und die andern sind im Licht
Und man siehet die im Lichte
Die im Dunkeln sieht man nicht.

There are some who are in darkness
And the others are in light
And you see the ones in brightness
Those in darkness drop from sight.

May I offer a better copy of the book cover? The one from Wikipedia in the OP is in poor shape. A more clear copy is attached.

To expand the image, right-click on it and select Open Image in New Tab or similar. Left-click on the expanded image may then expand it further. Procedures for mobile will vary.

No AI was used. This is a manual merge of two damaged copies created using #GIMP, #GMIC, and the GIMP Resynthesizer filter.

The knight is Sir Hokus of Pokes, presented in different Oz books as both a native Oz resident and an Arthurian knight. The boy is Speedy of Long Island, New York, likely aka William Harmstead, Speedy is blasted to Oz in a rocket built by an inventor uncle and teams up with Sir Hokus to rescue a princess named Marygolden.

M31 Andromeda

I went outside for the Aurora party, and all I got was this lousy Andromeda Galaxy.

Since I was a day late for the aurora, but the sky was relatively clear, I decided to try the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) again, this time with more integration time. This was in a Bortle class 4–5 area with occasional thin clouds (you can see the shine around the bright stars), but at least the moon rose late. It (again) worked out better than expected. M32 and M110 are clearly visible, and even finer details and colors of the galaxy can be seen.

This time, I used 868 frames with a total exposure time of 28 minutes and 56 seconds, with sporadic manual tracking. The FITS sequence file of the registered images was over 200 GB… and the standard processing script failed, because today I learned 400 GB is apparently not enough free space for processing astro images.

Post-processing was done in #Siril with #GraXpert and #StarNet, and then #GIMP including #GMIC. The annotation in the second image was also done in Siril.

Without a tracker, the larger field of view of the 158 mm (effective) lens is good, as I did not have to adjust the camera as often. But the need to crop out less-exposed outer areas reduces the available final resolution. Additionally, the maximum limit of 2 s exposures (any more and the Earth rotates too fast) requires many images (and data).

A square image of a galaxy in the starry night sky. The galaxy is a bright yellow spiral with thin dark parts. Some areas are bluish. The center looks like a bright star in a nebula. Two more galaxies are visible that are much smaller in the image and much less defined. There are many stars in front of the galaxy. The same square image of a galaxy in the starry night sky as the first image, but with annotations. Green circles and text mark the galaxies M31, M32, M110. The bright star cluster NGC206 inside the Andromeda Galaxy is marked. Two stars belonging to the Andromeda constellation are also annotated.

I’m not happy with the colours here, but it’s pretty close to the book (using colour-corrected monitor).

We used to visit #Cambridge when i was a teen, because Dad studied there before & after the war, although he was in Magdalene and not King’s.

Scan processed with #GIMP3 and the #GMIC plug-in.

Some people have funny ideas about sustainability in meetings. Concentrate on reducing greenhouse gases caused by travel and food.

Anyone using #PopOS know why the fuck the deb for #Krita that I can install from the Pop Shop doesn't have #GMIC working? (And don't tell me to install the fucking flatpak, fuck that flatpak shit.) The Krita website says that it's supposed to be included since version 5.0, and I've got 5.0.2 on my system. >.< When I go to the G'MIC site, it doesn't have anything for Krita to download to install, and I installed the general interface version from deb and can open that directly, but I want to use the tools on something saved in the Krita file type. >.<

The Pleiades

My first attempt at deep-sky photography with the Pleiades.

Since I do not have proper astrophotography equipment, I set up my trusty DSLR with my longest lens with a large aperture (a 105 mm f/2.8 macro lens) and put it on a simple ball head on a tripod. Then I went to an area with low light pollution, pointed the camera at the Pleiades, and let it rip. I had to adjust the framing from time to time, as I did not use a tracker. As soon as I started getting cold and did not want to stand around anymore, I went home.

I loaded everything into #digiKam and sorted out all images where the camera had moved during the shot (which were too many). The remaining 177 shots were converted with #Siril to a FITS sequence, registered, and stacked. Another image did not survive the process, so the final image contains 176 photos (amounting to 5 minutes and 52 seconds of exposure time). After some image magic with Siril (green-channel denoising, asinh transformation, color calibration, etc.), I loaded the final image into #GIMP (including #GMIC) for cropping and contrasting, and then #Darktable for denoising and getting the final look.

The most difficult part? Getting the macro lens to focus at infinity... Thanks to the aforementioned amazing open-source projects, processing the images was relatively painless.

A photo of a small section of the night sky. It contains a few larger, very bright bluish stars and a lot of other white, yellow, and blue stars. Blue nebulae surround the larger stars.

Apparently, G'MIC is now available on the Snap Store! I'm not a big fan of Snap, but if it helps users install G'MIC more easily, that’s definitely great news! 👍
