Went looking for a #NOAA weather radio, discovered that there's a ton of options, then discovered that you can get walkie-talkies with NOAA, and that a well-reputed model is not an #FRS radio but a #GMRS radio, and then went looking for GMRS info in the local area ....
Okay, that's a rabbithole for sure.
Just had a lake trip where there were definitely a few times that radios would have been useful, but I was the only #ham in the group.
As much as the Radio-nerd in me would prefer #GMRS for flexibility, #FRS would be sufficient and easier for this sort of outing. Are there any quality FRS radios that people recommend these days?
Preferably with USB-C charging.
Joined my first #GMRS net "call" earlier this evening!
I at least know there are 11 other people who had nothing to do on a Saturday evening other than talk on two-way radios.
HOLY SHIT!
After nearly a week of trying to get ahold of someone on a #GMRS repeater, I finally made contact with someone!
This is an absolute game changer!
Wonder if I can ask here:
#GMRS folks -
Last night, I CHIRPed my Beofeng UV-5G plus and put in some local repeaters I found on repeaterbook (that were open).
I can occassionally get the green light flickering as if I'm receiving a signal but I can't hear anything no matter how loud I turn the radio up.
I'm pretty sure I input something wrong on the CHIRP side - what did I most likely get wrong? The tone numbers are all correct but I'm wondering if I have the right tone listed.
It's lonely on 16 and 20 when you don't live near a GMRS repeater in range...
WSDP979 listening...
(Looking forward to getting my Technician license!)
What guidelines is anyone aware of about using #GMRS or #FRS #ht #radios at #protests vs. #cellphones ? The media has reported that the #insurrectionists used them. What about us? https://slate.com/technology/2022/06/far-right-extremism-radio-jan-6.html
It was hilariously bad to figure out how to pay for the fee part of my #GMRS License
We finally got a working Ailunce HA1UV

Today I just released another episode of The Bryce podcast! In this episode, I talked about the Baofeng BF-FHP Pro seventh generation 8 W radio. It's a fun little radio that goes from VHF to UHF, and has a wide range even as far as 520 MHz. I talk about my use of the radio, and things I transmit and listen to with the radio. I even did a little demonstration of it by turning it on, and punching in some frequencies on the keypad. Lastly, I discussed about the lack of voice prompts in the menu settings, as the radio reads a lot of other stuff, but not the menu which is a problem. This radio can also tune in air band, which most models can't. There's no headphone jack, which most models don't have to begin with. So give this new episode a listen!

How to get a GMRS license.
1. Register for a 10-digit FCC Registration Number (FRN).
2. Log in to the Universal Licensing System (ULS).
3. Select "ZA β General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS)" from the drop-down list.
4. Answer all the application questions and sign the application.
6. Pay the application fee. A GMRS license in the United States is $35. This fee is valid for 10 years.
7. Wait for the FCC to grant your license.
This huge #GMRS repeater network has been force unlinked by the owner because someone local went and threw a fit. So the repeater network that could go sometimes up to 200mi can now only go maybe 10 to 20 on a good day. I can't hit it hardly anymore. :(
MURS (Multi-Use Radio Service), CB (Citizens Band) and FRS (Family Radio Service) do not require a FCC license.
But GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service), HAM (Amateur Radio Service) and LMR (Land Mobile Radio) do require a FCC license.
Usually any device that transmits at 4 watts or higher requires coordination (and, thereby, licensing) by the FCC.
