@snowdusk I used #XFCE aplenty on my previous dual core no hyperthreading laptop with 4 Gb RAM. I always liked the likeness to #Gnome2, my first #Linux experience. Switching from #Windows, it cast a spell of silence on the laptop. I love this choice for a limited - resource machine. I wish XFCE had more contributors. I think it is a very important project, with very cool options.
Bring back GNOME 2 days with GNOME Shell Frippery!
GNOME 2 was a release series that had its initial version, 2.0, that was rolled out to users on June 26th, 2002. It looked antique at the time, but, over eight years until the last release in the version series, 2.32, that was released to the public on September 29th, 2010, it looked more and more attractive from new detailed icons to new features and more.
Since then, GNOME 3 was released on April 6th, 2011, to promote simplicity and minimalism.
However, most people who were used to GNOME 2 didn’t like GNOME 3, so alternatives like MATE existed. Now, there is an extension pack for the latest GNOME version series, called GNOME Frippery Shell, that allows you to change your GNOME desktop to make it look like the GNOME desktop in its golden days.
You can install Frippery either through the GNOME Shell Extensions website, which is recommended (search for Frippery), or use one of the following files:
After getting one of those files, extract the contents to one of the following directories:
Since the release of GNOME 3, a packaging request for Debian has been filed, but it was met with a lack of response for the whole fourteen years until the package has been finally pushed to unstable, with our expectations that Debian 14 (to be released 2027) will be the first release to ship this package. Then, Ubuntu adopted the package according to the Dssktop Team Integration Squad report as the first item to be listed in this report. Here’s the report about Frippery:
Sponsored Sébastien Noel’s packaging of gnome-shell-frippery into Debian Unstable. This package has been on the wishlist almost as long as GNOME 3 has existed. Unfortunately, Debian is entering Soft Freeze now so the package won’t be included in Debian 13.
However, this is GNOME 2 mixed into GNOME 3, so the powerful system is still required. If you wanted full GNOME 2 experience, we suggest that you install MATE or any other suitable alternatives.
Are you ready to experience the GNOME 2-like desktop?

🧵 1/n I'm using #KDE / #KDEneon for two days now - pretty neat - my bitching and moaning since #Gnome2 might finally come to an end. 😅
I'd like a GUI settings option to make a single stroke of the Super/Meta/Win key show me the "Overview", like in #Ubuntu #Gnome - I haven't found one, yet.
So, i'm trying this: https://develmonk.com/2024/03/23/kde-can-have-meta-super-key-blow-up-the-screen-just-like-gnome/
@thelinuxexperiment I'll always be thankful to #Canonical for getting me into GNU/Linux. I left #Ubuntu when #GNOME2 was no more. I never liked #Unity or #GNOME3.
Ich gebe zu, #Debian war (und ist) mir etwas zu konservativ. Auf meiner Suche nach etwas mehr #Privacy beim Surfen bin ich nun aber bei #ParrotSecurity gelandet. Recht aktueller Kernel, Tor auf Knopfdruck, einige Verschlüsselungstools out of the box u.s.w..
Schon in der Home- Edition also recht gut ausgestattet.
Zudem der #Mate- Desktop (Fork von #Gnome2), also GTK- basiert. Könnte ich mich dran gewöhnen.

Matko kochano, jakie to Ubuntu było ładne w czasach 8.04. Piękne takie, poramańczowe i wogle. Ciepłe kolorki i jeszcze bębenki bębniły na startup! W ogóle GNOME 2 to był sztos. Teraz już takich nie robio, panie. Komu to przeszkadzało, ja się pytam?

IIRC, look and feel of #WindowMaker is inspired by #NeXTSTEP on #NeXT.
And I'm using #Mate, the fork of #Gnome2, until noticing #Gnome3 no longer fits me and Mate was ported to #FreeBSD, maybe on ThinkPad T61, T420 and P52. #Mate seems to be ported to #NetBSD, too.

I'm a #MATE user, by the way (continuation of #GNOME2). So far, it's the only #DesktopEnvironment I've used extensively. Perhaps some day I'll try #GNOME.
@zen_xen_ni Stary, powiadasz? Znalazłem zrzuty ze stycznia 2007 i sierpnia 2006 :)

@thelinuxexperiment 2011 - initial release of #gnome3
2023 - world is still waiting for sane support of tray icons so we will get a bit closer to usability of #gnome2
@distrotube I loved the old #GNOME2. I've also been a #MATE user for many years.
If you loved #Gnome2, you'll love #Maté.
Just imagine an alternate universe where Gnome didn't go hell bent for leather to re-invent the wheel, and they kept polishing and polishing Gnome2.
That's precisely what Maté is.
I'm not a huge fan of Ubuntu, but Ubuntu Maté (even in a VM) is probably the best way to experience it.
Aaaand to honour that history, and keep the achievements and functionality, #GNOME2 brought us, #MATE forked it 11 years ago and provides what #GNOME developers worked on for most of its lifetime to future generations and all those who wanted to keep using their desktop as it was instead of relearning how to use it
@gerazo Most of my experience comes from waaaaay back (#gnome2), and somehow I never could get used to Gnome 3. I also used KDE a lot before the Plasma era. Currently neither of these really resonate with me. 😢 However I still think XFCE is the tinkerer's dream and I really liked Pantheon even though I never really used a Mac.
And oh these desktop effects such nostalgia from #Gnome2 days, I'm definitely going to waste so much of my productive time configuring every single thing down to the smallest detail according to my preference, as much as I won't be even remembering my configuration.
