Finally getting around to cleaning and reframing some of my grandparents’ tapestries that were sent to me

Some are in reasonable condition. Others are totally grotty, oil, water and critter damaged, covered in cobwebs, and a couple need missing (munched?) stitches replaced. My sibling had stored them outside under their balcony (!!)

But, I think this will turn into a “what Not to do” when framing needlework.

Don’t use:
- warped and non-square laminate left over from a kitchen as a backing board.
- glue or tape that remains forever sticky on the backing paper.
- anything that will rust (nails/staples, no staples at all, preferably).

And don’t trim canvases - you lose both structural integrity near the stitching and the information about the design and publisher (and sometimes colour info).

There is less than a cm of canvas between the stitching and where it was trimmed after being stapled, making it very challenging to remove, clean and block dry. It will be a pain in the butt to reinforce too, with so little fabric.

At least the stretcher frame seems to be in good condition on this one.

A tapestry out of its frame is face down on a grey granite floor. It has been stretched over a very not-flat sheet of brown faux-wood laminate from the 60’s and stapled in place. At least this one wasn’t trimmed so it will be easy to wash, block and lace in place on a new stretcher frame.

Ich habe dieses Bild vor einigen Jahren als Komplettpackung mal auf dem Flohmarkt gefunden. Nun endlich habe ich es fertig, nach etlichen acht Jahren. Es ist in Gobelin gestickt. Gestern habe ich es vom Glaser wieder abgeholt mit Rahmen. Das Bild ist 83 cm x 47 cm groß.
