Knowlegable Android devs needed: Help the European Commission regulate Google Play

A call for help from @eighthave@librem.one, who among other things is associated with F-droid:

An open call to #Android #developers! The #EuropeanCommission needs help evaluating #GooglePlay's #security claims. I'm going to do what I can. Anyone with knowledge of how app installation, uninstallation, sandboxing, signing, etc. could really help here. If you want to contribute, please reach out!

I figured maybe someone around here could be capable of helping out. Note that his Mastodon instance, librem.one, does not support private messages.

@desirable_dialogue @fdroidorg It is a valid criticism that sometimes updates are too slow, and one we're working on as a top priority. We recently optimized our release cycle to reduce it by 6 hours. Much bigger changes are coming soon:

#GooglePlay also regularly delays updates. #GrapheneOS trusts Play more than free software communities, published external audits, reproducible builds, and a 15 year track record. On that, I think we can agree to disagree.

#Google presented their AI-based app review at #DMAWorkshop. Many apps are falsely flagged by #GooglePlay. Lots of trusted app developers built their reputation on free and open source software #Nextcloud #Signal #Thunderbird and more. These developers welcome more scrutiny on their source code. Why doesn't Google Play allow app developers to upload source code to provide more accurate reviews? How about requiring Google's own apps go through the same review?

@ilumium @GrapheneOS @article19 When I asked #Google a follow-up question using Google's own terminology, like #PlayIntegrity #GMS etc. their team of three competition lawyers brushed it aside saying they didn't understand the acronyms. They did not let me clarify. This is a classic example of the Google lawyers being conveniently #ignorant of the key details of things the Google Play team does that nicely props up their monopoly.

A question to #Google about whether they could allowlist apps for sideloading they know to be legit. They punted and gave a weak attempt at a technical reason. They say their is a 100 million apps out there, so how could they ever? And malicious apps can impersonate the Application ID. Sure, true, but they could also allowlist based on all the signing keys, which cannot be simply faked and they already manage in #GooglePlay

Google Play System Update (June 2025) rolls out for Samsung devices

Google Play System Update was a feature that was introduced for devices that ship with Android 10 or newer. It’s mandatory for device manufacturers that plan to release their devices with Android 10 to support Google Play System Updates. As a result, non-Google devices, such as Samsung Galaxy phones and tablets released with Android 10 (One UI 2.1), can receive such updates, too.

These updates don’t require security updates from the manufacturer to work, as Project Mainline modules work independently to give you better experience with Android phones and tablets.

On July 1st, a new Google Play System Update has been pushed to Samsung devices. This update upgrades your Project Mainline modules to the June 1st, 2025 version. This update weighs around 75 MB.

To be able to get this version, follow these steps:

  1. Go to your device’s settings
  2. Open the security settings
  3. Find “Google Play System Update” and tap on it
  4. If everything goes OK, you should see the below update dialog:

Click on Download and Install, wait for it to download, then reboot your device by clicking on the blue Restart button. The next time your device boots up, the revised update gets installed, so it’s going to take about 3 minutes maximum to install all the updates.

There is no progress bar, so don’t panic if it looks stuck. Your device will eventually boot up. Now, open your settings app and check your Google Play System Update. If everything is well, you should see June 1st, 2025 below the appropriate button.

In case your device didn’t receive the update, wait for a few days, and it will be available shortly.

Stay tuned for the July patch of 2025!

The Google Play Store could soon receive a new download progress notification, allowing users to easily keep track of app downloads.
