Was soll das? Und wie komme ich auf diese Mailingliste? 1/2

Are you a user wondering what's happened to comp.text.tex now that has shuttered its gateway? We give an explanation in the latest issue of TUGboat: The Communications of the @TeXUsersGroup: tug.org/TUGboat/tb45-3/tb141lu

I'm trying to change the email address I use for mailing lists through #GoogleGroups, ideally without unsubscribing/resubscribing for each list. Their documentation implies you can do it but what they say doesn't match what I see. More details at powerusers.codidact.com/posts/. Anyone know a way to do this?

I maintain an email discussion list on google groups for a small nonprofit community group. We have about 20 participants. I'm looking to bail from google groups, mainly because of the unremovable footer in every message that gets repeated ad infinitum. Can anyone suggest an uncomplicated alternative? I want to keep it as an email listserv (not a discord-type thing, etc.) Thanks!

@nep @ticky How capable is #Google of solving tech problems? Have they ever handled Spam properly, when it's posted from *their own services*?

They've shut down their peering with #USENET rather than address the Spam problem in #GoogleGroups, that was flooding some groups with thousands of junk posts daily.

And some group archives there are still unavailable because of spam posted via Google...

I wonder if anyone at #google knows that #googlegroups is still running.

As a fun fact, apparently I got added to a Google Group without my consent called "Zombi Porn" back in 2018, and I just noticed this. It appeared to have over 9,000 members, presumably none of which wanted to be in it. Google is truly incredible at everything they do.

@Methylcobalamin
#GoogleGroups should still(*) have the messages up to the cut-off date, but it might be hard to browse the archive of affected groups because of all the spam.

(*) At least until it gets flagged for having spam and Google blocks it because it has spam — yes, Google blocks groups for having spam that was injected via Google, it has happened before, there are still groups affected by it, and probably will happen again until somebody finally fixes some internal process...

@Methylcobalamin People are still on comp.os.linux.misc, it is active. Spam was being injected via Google's servers, and some news servers either had more elaborate filtering in place, or just rejected anything from Google, making this and other affected groups usable.

Currently, #GoogleGroups is not getting any new content because when an internal ticket about the spam was escalated enough, the decision was apparently to cut the feed instead of fixing the spam problem.

comp.os.linux.misc has been overrun with spam. At least as it is viewed on the web via Google Groups.

It had one of the best crowds for solving Linux issues.

Does anyone know if that crowed migrated somewhere else?

Anybody has experience with FramaGroups/FramaGroupes/Sympa? I see no way to add members in bulk, despite being described in the documentation...

Is there an alternative to Google Groups that has reasonable pricing, unlike Groups.io, and that's exclusively a normal mailing list without bells and whistles?

#GoogleGroups is ending support for #Usenet to combat #spam
The upcoming changes will take effect from February 22, 2024, after which users can no longer post, subscribe, or view new Usenet content through #Google Groups.
However, historical Usenet content posted before this cutoff date will remain accessible for viewing and searching on the platform.

Interesting. I received a report from AT&T and Yahoo servers complaining about email sent through an unrelated GoogleGroups list for my custom domain. Good thing I don't have reject/drop enabled on my DMARC policy.

Can you get it together and appropriately rewrite the email headers?

The first reply is so funny. "It has been FIVE years since the release of Windows 95, and that must have been long enough to find replacement apps for the ones you are using now."

Like buddy. OP said it was a standalone system. :blobfoxlaughsweat:

I wonder how Maarten might reply if that same question were made today, in an era where people continue to use definitely ancient hardware and OSes for pleasure and sport. :blobfoxcomfycomputer:
