Okay, I've gotten back to #BASIC, and this time I dug deeper. Seems like there are means of abstractions after all. There are one-liner functions (DEF FN) and multi-line subroutines (GO SUB & RETURN.) So I can actually structure my programs without #GOTO-s! Maybe I'll implement #ed in BASIC after all...

Just another 4-letter word?

In 1985 Konrad #Zuse gave an interview to the German magazin #DerSpiegel where the #GOTO problem was discussed:
A very nice paper on 4 taboos of #programming (explicit control transfer [#GOTO], low-level programming [#assembly], #flowcharts, and global variables) - with a neat theoretical background in #anthropologic taboo theory.
Tracing back #programming language history to the root of the very first (mnemonic) #GOTO instruction (jump/branch) I found two different sources:
1. In 1954 Nathanael Rochester developed the "first" mnemonic #assembler for the #IBM 701 #mainframe computer that uses "TR" jump commands: https://shrtn.escalar.pt/ZuE5
2. In 1947 the "manual" for the #Whirlwind computer contained the "sp x" mnemonic: https://shrtn.escalar.pt/FdYC
So, which one was actually the "first" to use mnemonics for branching?
I think the #BASIC RETURN command is the root of all #SpaghettiCode evil! It works like a #COMEFROM (https://shrtn.escalar.pt/OXnO) and hinders you to understand the code on the first sight (without reading it closely and executing it mentally). A friend suggested to change its function to RETURNTO. 😅
