Next, we're turning our attention to the mountains in the distance and the rolling hills in the foreground. The Independence Mine area is surrounded by mountains on all side and what you see in this scene is just a fraction of what can be experienced around this location.

Here I've added more detail on the hood and jacket, such as seams, wrinkles and such. More texture work, I suppose. Also started working on the eyes.

Then we're on to the hat itself. It's a knitted hat and to be honest, at this stage I wasn't very confident this was going to turn out good at all. There was a lot of detail I wanted to capture and getting the background colors right was critical at this stage.

But, it's coming along, wouldn't you say?

In this image, we've already moved far beyond the background. The hood, the jacket and the face covering (the buff) all got their first layers of paint to setup shadows and highlighted areas. I'm particularly excited about the hood at this stage, as it's really starting to look like the reference photo.

This is just an experiment from yesterday. I tried to create black from gouache in in the colors Burnt Umber and Ultramarine, then adden some fully pigmented cobalt blue lines, and then painted some green water lily leaves onto the yet wet paper. The background is way too dark, but i realized how the two paints create black together.
