The girl was a student who posed for a couple of portraits.
She wasn’t the very first, but this photo is perhaps a good example of how I was a bit obsessed with depth of field. But I still managed to achieve it with my little cheap camera…
And that’s the funny thing about photographing people and portraits… I met her once in my life and never again after that. Neither of us experienced it as something negative, we simply said thanks, shared the photos and then continued with our lives.

Model or portrait photography is always a struggle and a search… If you can’t throw money at it, you end up spending more time looking and asking than actually photographing.

And as I already mentioned, I felt like doing portrait photography, so I was looking for faces to photograph. She wasn’t the very first, but this photo is perhaps a good example of how I was a bit obsessed with depth of field. But I still managed to achieve it with my little cheap camera…

Model or portrait photography is always a struggle and a search… If you can’t throw money at it, you end up spending more time looking and asking than actually photographing. E. did come back several times, and for example, this poster was made together with her.

So many years later, she’s now a film director, living on the other side of the world, but we still have contact and appreciation for each other.

And then this accident happened with an image from my Canon AE-1…
I got an unwanted double exposure and was completely surprised by the result — so much so that I actually started searching for it. When I later picked up my A1 and also a Chinon CE-4, I could really experiment and discover how to control a double exposure.
After a while I mastered it so well that you could no longer even see that I had used the effect (and then no one found it interesting anymore ;)

From the moment I took the AE-1 out of my in-laws’ cupboard out of necessity (my digital camera was broken) and jumped back into analog, I was completely sold. And in no time I found a few cheap analog cameras. (Cameras that cost a month’s salary in my youth I was now buying for €20.)
And although I’m not into cam porn at all, I still see this photo a little bit as a child portrait of my youngest daughter (back then she was still willing to pose for her dad).

The AE-1 was the first camera that brought me back to shooting analog (and that is also quite a long time ago), but it never really became my favorite. Still, it was certainly a great way to get started again!

After all these years, finding a logic again in what kind of photos to post is very difficult.
(Belgium is grey, and I don’t photograph that much in winter.)
But apparently, I’m now lingering with the Canon AE-1 and the colour red. And maybe also with the desire that emerged to photograph people.
It’s been a long time, but this is a holiday photo, my eldest daughter, who at the time was at that in-between age between child and girl. It wasn’t posed, she was lost in thought, alone on a rock by the river somewhere in the #Languedoc, #France.
It was the first time in years that I had taken an analog camera with me on a holiday trip again. And in fact, I knew immediately after switching back to analog that that was where my love belonged. It was also the period when I could finally buy the cameras I could only dream of in my youth and now for next to nothing.

The AE-1 was the first camera that brought me back to shooting analog (and that is also quite a long time ago), but it never really became my favorite. Still, it was certainly a great way to get started again!

This is probably one of the photos that made me long for model photography… At that time, I had just returned to shooting with an analog camera, and I was a bit obsessed with separating the subject from the background by using depth of field. Of course, in everyday life it rarely happens that a person appears perfectly as a subject in front of you and you have the time to photograph them
(Old camera analog is always a bit slower).
In this way, the hunger to photograph people emerged, and the search for #models began.

Sur les berges de l’étang se trouvait un banc, démuni et cabossé, pourtant sans signe d’usure. Il y a été mis là dans l’espoir d’apporter du réconfort aux âmes esseulées. Ne subsiste que l’utopie de rencontres en retrait de la route. Celle qui longe ces étendues d’eau où seuls se répondent les reflets des arbres environnants.

Years ago, I was contacted by an international photo model. She was completely obsessed with my photos and really wanted to pose for me. At the appointment there was a bit of confusion, because she found my photography so incredibly #feminine, and now a man was standing in front of her…
