Gjon Mili

This graphite pencil drawing ‘Neo Deco - 10-03-25’ is dedicated to the impressive work of Albanian photographer Gjon Mili. Recently I discovered his photographs online searching for art deco-type female forms in sheer dresses. Flabbergasted I was. What a lovely feel for hefty tonality! Enough reason to honor him and take one of his photos as artistic motif. It’s a picture from 1945 and apparently it served as a cover photo for Time Magazine back then. It’s almost as if this image marks an entire era coming to an end. Not coincidentally coinciding with the ending of World War II you’d say. Strolling throug his work I also saw later work from the 1950s. A whole new ball game. Much lighter photography. Equally impressve but I’d trade them in for the chiaroscuro play of light and dark any time.

Dressed up

Lately I am interested in dressing up women again. Female forms in the nude are attractive to draw of course but I wanted something new. Attire can give me that and I got inspired by drawing Carole Lombard. Folds can take on any shape. Roundish but also very straight looking. They support the overall bodyshape, especially when they shimmer through just as in ‘Sheer Deco Nude – 14-10-22’. Selecting and drawing those folds wasn’t very difficult. In fact I quite liked the result. It became more abstracted and cubistically styled than it lets on. And why not? Sheer copying is not my cup of tea and I wanted to enforce the art deco feel even more.

Helen Folasade Adu, lead singer of the band Sade.

Inspired from a photograph by Chris Roberts in 1990.

My idea was notably to highlight the strength of contrasts.
I just used
- a 4H graphite pencil,
- a twenty-five years old mechanical pencil whose lead (I suppose that) is a HB one and that I last used when I was a child,
- a stick of compressed charcoal.

Ben-Hur portrayed by Charlton Heston in the eponym movie.

A former prince now a slave rowing in a Roman galley, following an unfornate event, unfair judgement and betrayal from a childhood friend... The movie is (notably) about resentment and forgiveness.

Drawn casually chiling in coffees, bars and parks, on a A5 sketchbook with a 8B graphite pencil.

Ms Bacall

This graphite pencil drawing ‘Sans Titre 30-10-24’ is inspired by a picture of Lauren Bacall in a satin dress. Not the first time though I immortalized her in graphite. Back in 2014 I only drew her portrait. This time the focus is entirely on the dress. Yet again I have to admit to my satin fetish. Before you think I am a pervert it’s only for the sake of art. These shiny glitters simply keep on fascinating me. Since I consider myself a true tonalist these subtle shifts in tonal values are my very cup of tea.

Value Added?

Starting this drawing I had it in me to apply a cubist style like I did with Anna Sten for example. However, taking a closer look at the dress and its folds I came to a different conclusion. The folds and glimmers were too perfect to be ruined my by type of cubism. Then again, in the process of drawing I soon realized I was only copying it. Even though the head already had a mild cubist styling I decided to cancel that too. Back to square one so to speak because what value I could add to the scenery? Then I remembered the phenomenon of Inktober; something I never participated in. For no particular reason I hardly work with ink but combined with the approaching Halloween I had an idea.

Bart van der Leck

This graphite pencil drawing ‘Bastet – 15-10-24’ is made in honor of dutch artist Bart van der Leck. Or should I say his famous painting ‘De Kat’? My parents had the poster in our house so I’ve known it all my life. If you want to see it on display please go to the Kröller Muller Museum here in The Netherlands. It’s worth the trip and you get all the Van Gogh paintings as a bonus. There was a direct reason to associate Bart’s painting with the artistic motif at hand.

Christian Coigny

Christian Coigny is a Swiss photographer who once took a picture of a woman with a cat. The latter is sitting on a central heating system. The position reminded me of Van der Leck’s cubist cat. Hence, they both became the inspirational sources for this particular drawings. However, I changed the composition dramatically; I cropped the picture big time for example. Another thing is that I left out the mug on the table. The central heating the cat is on is left out and is replaced by a plain windowstill. The female posture I heavily abstracted. The only reference to his picture is the way the light falls on both beings.

Subtle Tones

As to the artistic process finding forms wasn’t too difficult really. The difficulty lies in getting all the sutble tones right. Above all, I wanted to prevent the scenery becoming ‘clumpy’. Instead I took Monet’s vision of atmospheric depth to heart. Therefor I wanted to create the delicate atmosphere around the woman and the cat combined. .

Greta’s Rival

This graphite pencil drawing ‘Sans Titre – 02-10-24’ depicts Ukrainian moviestar and celebrity Anna Sten. She is sometimes compared to Greta Garbo. Allegedly Goldwyn sought for a foreign actress who could rival Greta. What do you know? Only after the completion of this drawing I took another look at the picture and even googled it. Then I saw she actually was Anna Sten. Even though they don’t really look alike in this picture Anna looks a bit like Greta. It must have been the bulby eyelids the latter surely prominently is bestowed upon. Don’t mind which of the two persons she is. Primarily I was attracted to the excellent dark and light division. A tonal play that is a feast to the eye. Besides that, the hairdo simply is a outstanding challenge for an artist like me.

Hairy Structures

Last drawing of Marlene Dietrich (Sans Titre – 29-09-24) got me all fired up to do another portrait. Or should I say draw hairy structures? Personally I found Marlene’s drawing turned out rather well. The abstraction was perfect. However, this time the hair was a tall order because there was more of it. Surely I didn’t want to repeat myself by executing hairs in the same way the second time around. Luckily the complexity of the hair-do gave me more freedom to experiment. Although I kept the overall concept of horizontally and vertically placed blocks I also drew a lot of swirls. More than last drawing I’d say.
