Portraiture

This graphite pencil drawing ‘Neo Deco – 07-07-25’ shows Ms Granatouroff’s portrait only. Well, a bit of her arm but I this time I wanted something different than a nude. Last drawing was fine and proved to be succesful though. However, when I am attracted to a model I want to show more aspects of her. Through this portrait I want to demonstrate how a portrait can be sensual too. The image was captured by photographer Ergy Landau by whom I was also inspired two drawings back. Obviously Assia’s hair claimed a prominent role this time as well and I felt I truely could add some value. It was only at the beginning of this drawing I saw I already drew her hair last year. Dora Maar’s interpretation converged into one of my own, becoming ‘Neo Deco – 08-10-14’. So now I finally know who this beautiful actually woman is.

Effortlessly

I was quite satisfied with last drawing, you know. Fabriano Ingres paper proved to be a true asset in my attempts to create ‘open forms’. Through the grainy structure of the paper I found the essentials of a good portrait. In my opinion it lies in spontaneity. Not taken up as a tool but as a result of great motivation. Becoming in love with a model does that. Hence, capturing her features became very easy, almost effortlessly. Almost as if I knew I didn’t have to elaborate her facial expression with many nifty graphite pencil tricks.

Gjon Mili

This graphite pencil drawing ‘Neo Deco - 10-03-25’ is dedicated to the impressive work of Albanian photographer Gjon Mili. Recently I discovered his photographs online searching for art deco-type female forms in sheer dresses. Flabbergasted I was. What a lovely feel for hefty tonality! Enough reason to honor him and take one of his photos as artistic motif. It’s a picture from 1945 and apparently it served as a cover photo for Time Magazine back then. It’s almost as if this image marks an entire era coming to an end. Not coincidentally coinciding with the ending of World War II you’d say. Strolling throug his work I also saw later work from the 1950s. A whole new ball game. Much lighter photography. Equally impressve but I’d trade them in for the chiaroscuro play of light and dark any time.

Dressed up

Lately I am interested in dressing up women again. Female forms in the nude are attractive to draw of course but I wanted something new. Attire can give me that and I got inspired by drawing Carole Lombard. Folds can take on any shape. Roundish but also very straight looking. They support the overall bodyshape, especially when they shimmer through just as in ‘Sheer Deco Nude – 14-10-22’. Selecting and drawing those folds wasn’t very difficult. In fact I quite liked the result. It became more abstracted and cubistically styled than it lets on. And why not? Sheer copying is not my cup of tea and I wanted to enforce the art deco feel even more.

Inspired from a photograph by Chris Roberts in 1990.

My idea was notably to highlight the strength of contrasts.
I just used
- a 4H graphite pencil,
- a twenty-five years old mechanical pencil whose lead (I suppose that) is a HB one and that I last used when I was a child,
- a stick of compressed charcoal.

Trude Fleischmann

This graphite pencil drawing ‘Neo Deco – 25-01-25’ is born out of admiration of the works of Austrian photographer Trude Fleischmann. Whose work I had the privilege to see in Museum Arnhem as explained in my previous pastel ‘Neo Deco – 12-01-25’. There were and odd 4 photos of her present and they were all brilliant in their own right. The second that struck me became the motif of this drawing.

Solving a Compositional Problem

First I had an execution in mind similar to ‘Roundism – 25-12-17 (Sold)’. Somehow I associated the artistic motif at hand with that one. Soon I thought of something different. Sheer styling after my old Roundism fashion doesn’t inspire me much anymore. Then again I thought of the empty space in the right section above the middle. This would eventually become an artwork tending heavily towards the chiaroscuro side. So I immediately thought of a recent drawing ‘Sans Titre – 30-10-24 (Lauren Bacall)’. Introducing a window with a full moon in it would solve a compositional problem I faced. All things round and slanted could need a bit of straight vertical and horizontal structures. This way I had a square cube she is sitting on. Then all her roundish glory slanted in the middle and a cube in the upper right corner. Just my cup of tea.

That didn’t satisfy my whim down yet. The window and the moon were fine alright but I wanted to have some reference to Trude.
