Reading Time: 3 minutes

A few years ago I went for a ride and noticed that people were standing by the side of the roads and there was little traffic. I eventually realised that it was for the Tour De Romandie and that I was riding at least an hour ahead of the race. It was a strange and interesting sensation.

Tomorrow I plan to repeat that experience with a slight difference. I saw that there was a mixed bike ride tomorrow ahead of the Tour De Romandie Feminine the next day. I signed up and thought I had been ignored, as I'm a guy. That wasn't the case. I was accepted.

There are two loops available. The first one is a 90 kilometre loop at 28-30km/h and the second one is a 50 km loop at 25 km/h on the flat. I feel more comfortable with the shorter loop.

This year I have walked at least 1700 km but only 780km or so, so it's better to take the easier option, not to be exhausted.

Too Much choice

As usual, because it's the weekend I know of two hikes, on to Le Reculet, another near Leukerbad, one via ferrata to the Rocher De Naye and two bike rides, one within the context of the Tour de Romandie for women, and the second for a bike ride from Lutry to St Gingolph.

Two Pull Factors

There are two factors that attract me to this event. The first is that it's fun to cycle along a cycling event route and to experience what I could watch people experiencing on Sunday. The second factor is that by doing a group activity, such as this cycling event I will meet people who enjoy cycling as I do and it leads to more future activities.

Getting There and Back

I considered cycling to Morges, doing the ride, and then cycling back but that will fatigue me before the event starts. Instead I plan to take the train to Morges, cycle to the event, and then cycle home when it's over. I could take the car but the cost of parking and fuel will be equivalent to taking the train whilst not avoiding Morges traffic.

The Buridan Moment

Choosing not to drive to Leukerbad was easy, because of the long drive and choosing not to do Le Reculet is relatively easy because it's people I don't know yet so I don't know what I am missing. Choosing between the VF and Cycling is harder. It's not that I want to do the VF, it's that I feel I should see the group I know but I am not filled with a burning desire to do the Via Ferrata, especially this weekend.

The Cycling Opportunity

I know of a group that cycles within the Canton of Geneva every week and I know of one that cycles from Divonne every month, but I don't know of a group that cycles from around where I live regularly. That's why going for tomorrow's bike ride is a good idea.

A Final Cascade

Weeks ago I heard that friends were going to Leukerbad so I thought I would do that. I then noticed that Le Reculet would take place closer to home, with a group that was closer to me in age. I then saw that a group I'm part of but have mixed feelings about created a VF. I signed up to the cycling event because I thought it was Sunday, but then saw that it was Saturday so I became quadruple booked.

Leukerbad was easy to eliminate because of logistics. It's a long way to go for a walk when I could do one nearby. That was fine until the VF came up, but then when I was allowed into the cycle event that muddled things up again.

The most exciting proposition is the bike ride. As it's advertised as mixed I'm sure that it's fine for me to go but I still have a little reservation about it. I considered going at 08:30 to see how it was, and then wait for the 10:00 event to start. If I did that then I could easily abort the bike ride and head for the VF. VF gear takes no space in a car.

I have enjoyed slow-up events, Critical Mass and cycling meetups so I am finally feeling confident that the cycling event is the right one. I will know for certain this evening.

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Two weeks ago I thought that I would have an issue with this weekend and I was right. I thought that I would want to do a hike with one group, and do a Via Ferrata with a second group. That situation is now a reality.

A Good Hiking Group and a Goal I want to Reach

I have wanted to walk up to the Dent De Vaulion for a few weeks now, and on Saturday I have the opportunity to do this with a group, rather than alone. Not only this, but it's also a group that I appreciated being with two weeks ago. I want to experience that group again on Saturday. The issue is that it's a 13km walk with 700m of climbing. In my experience the distance is usually longer than planned, and if it is sunny and warm then heat fatigue is possible.

Having Energy in the Evening

My other concern has been around for weeks at this point. If I have lunch at midday and then I do something physical like a Via Ferrata in the evening, then how do I ensure that I have enough energy to do the climb. I was considering this challenge ahead of deciding that I wanted to do the hike in the morning. If I do the hike I will be fatigued. If I spend the day in the sun the sun will fatigue me. If I do not have snacks with me during the climb, and water, then I will be fatigued too.

Fear of Mission Out - FOMO

What this situation boils down to is FOMO. I want to go on the hike because I have a fear of missing out. But missing out on what? Meeting good people. By that logic the Via Ferrata Illuminé will be an excellent opportunity to meet people as well. We'll be at the registration, and then we'll be at the funiculaire, and then on the Via ferrate, and then at the top for the meal, and then on the télécabine down. In theory I will have my crowd bath (Bain de foule) with ease. If I save my energy for the evening then that is when I will benefit the most.

Once Per Year and a Short Season

The via Ferrata Illuminé is once per year in Moléson. This means that I need to do it on a specific day, or I will have to wait another year for another opportunity. The hike, in contrast, is easy to organise anytime. In fact it may be a good hike to do in Autumn, when the leaves are changing colour. I have been to the Vallée de Joux and Vallorbe quite a few times this year so it may be rational not to go yet again.

And Finally

I will stay signed in to the hike until it reaches 25 people, and at this point I may pull out to allow someone else the opportunity to enjoy the hike, that has no other plans. Logistically if I do the hike I need to park at Le Pont. The train is once an hour from Le Pont. If time is tight I want the flexibility of the car.

In an ideal world both activities would be on different day.

Most of us will associate Škoda with the Tour De France and vice versa. When my brother got a Škoda that’s what I associated it with. Škoda France has a team of people that organise group cycling events to promote the Škoda brand.

## Critical Mass and Others

I have cycled with groups before. I cycled at Critical mass events in london, but also one or two smaller cycling events in Geneva. With critical mass bike rides everyone is dressed in normal clothes, on normal bikes, cycling at a sociable pace through towns and cities.

## Skoda WLC

The Škoda WLC events in France are a little different. Everyone is dressed in cycling clothes, with road bikes. They’re also fast cyclists. It’s not just that they’re fast. They also have endurance. By fast I mean that they’re faster than a critical mass event, and a sociable group cycle via another platform. They also have greater endurance.

## About the Ride

The bike ride today was about 50km. This is at the limit of what I would usually cycle because it burns a lot of energy, and requires refuelling along the way. The other challenge is that this year I have just 240 kilometres of cycling under my pedals, but at least 1360 km of walking.

The leader of the group had 7000 kilometres of cycling for this year so far. That’s why it was hard for me. That’s why I was slower. If I cycled more, then I would find the group ride much easier because my muscles would adapt to cycling. At the moment they’re optimised for walking every day for one and a half hours a day, every day of the year.

## You Get Pushed

You can tell that the group ride was hard because I achieved 21 achievements in a single ride. That’s why it’s good to ride with such a group. If I ride by myself I push myself but on a route that I’m used to. With a group I am pushed where I would take it easier. I could have pushed more but I could feel that my energy was running out.

It ran out so badly that when I cycled from Divonne to home I had no more energy in the tank. I limped home. Usually I sprint up the last two climbs but not today.

## About the Group

From what I see the people in the group are avid cyclists that cycle regularly so they have a good level of cycling fitness. They’re also used to riding in a peloton so they don’t get as tired as those of us riding on the outside. By participating in more rides I learn to ride safely within a peloton. For now staying within a safe distance is better.

## Hard but Enjoyable

Despite struggling and being slower than many nearer the end the ride was fun and I want to do it again. I learned of a road between La Rippe and Divonne that is at the base of the Jura. I was familiar with another road that has a warning. That one had none. It was a Douanne warning.

### Sheltered Within a Group

One nice aspect of riding with a group is that you’re more sheltered than when you ride alone. It’s harder for people to overtake you dangerously so they are less likely to. They overtake with plenty of space, especially if you’re slotted behind the group on the right, away from traffic.

It’s also interesting to see how indications are used to say “get into the side” when cars are coming from opposite, or “move right” for another obstacle.

## A Zwift Feeling

More than once during this ride I got a feeling that it felt like Zwift. You’re riding to catch up with a group, or you can wait for another to catch up with you, and then coast behind them. If a hiking group is 10 people or more it feels like a crowd, but when 10 or more people are cycling together it feels good.

## And Finally

By going for this ride it woke my desire to cycle more, to go to the slowup next week. Cycling is a nice sport, and it would be even nicer if there were more routes that are free of traffic. I have wanted to find a group to cycle with for a while, so it’s nice to have one at last.

Some of the plates so far. At most tables only one person is working on each plate, or a few on and off. But at our table (the band table) we’re passing it around and each contributing. Because #sharingiscaring I guess 🥴🍷🎨
