My HackRF One was working fine last night. Now how did I manage to fry a ground filter? Oh and of course the USB port is dead on the PC. Fortunately my iCOM 7100’s USB interface is fine.

@Moosader Do it. Renewal is cheap and you won’t need to retake the test. Point to point communication will be useful, even if you cannot legally encrypt it. Familiarize yourself with SDR, in particular the #HackRFOne made by @GreatScottGadgets

1. Good department meeting with the dean today.
2. Ordered a lot of hardware for next semester’s classes.
3. Got #GnuRadio working natively on my ARM Mac with my #HackRFOne.

Yesterday I tried a complete other #hydrogenline setup, different antenna, the Nooelec Sawhird H1 LNA and the #hackrfone SDR instead of my spectrum analyzer.

Result was good 😃 A clear peak at 1420.544MHz, about 40kHz Doppler shift, with a decent SNR.

I used ‘GQRX’ but found it a bit annoying to tune, it took quite a while before I got the picture you can see. I wanted to zoom much more, but couldn’t make it work.

So what SW do you use for radio astronomy?

Anyway, the signal passed the ‘double sanity check: 1) Disconnect power to the LNA: it goes away. 2) Rotate the antenna away from the Milkyway: it goes away - rotate back: it returns 😃

OK, I did my double-slit experiment using narrow-band #FM transmission on the 23 cm #HamRadio band using a #HackRFOne and an RTL #SDR. Raw data looks inconclusive, but I'll have to plot it to see what's going on. I hope I can see at least a little interference pattern. If not, I'll try the anechoic chamber to check under ideal conditions.

A receiver software defined radio antenna, magnetically attached to a steel ground plane. The antenna is behind a double-slit made of aluminum foil and is hooked up to a laptop running SDR software. There is a lab book to the right of the laptop for data logging.A lab setup with a transmitting antenna to the left of a double slit made of aluminum foil. I finally built the screen for my double slit experiment. Time to fire up that trusty #HackRFOne #SDR. If my math is right, at 23cm wavelength we should see a separation of the interference fringes of 1.15 m at a distance of 1 m behind the screen. I just hope edge diffraction and multipath is not going to totally kill it. Will find out hopefully tomorrow. If it works, it'll be a nice assignment for my students. If not, I'll have to stick to boring old lasers.

@kylewritescode Hang in there, my friend.

As for me, I’ll try to do the double slit experiment on the 23 cm #HamRadio band using an old Covid barrier wrapped in aluminum foil. The idea is to demonstrate interference, edge diffraction, and multi path propagation to my students. No idea whether this will work in our lab/classrooom with the el cheapo RTL #SDR receivers and the #HackRFOne I have. I shall #FAFO.
