Single ply yardage counting in progress!

I'd finished spinning the ~7 oz of Oni's fur that I processed on the drum carder and wanted to know how much I had for plying, so I broke out my cone winder and yardage counter for only the second time and let them spin!

Answer: ~780 yd total!

I was torn between making it 2-ply or 3-ply, but ultimately decided to split things into 3x 260 yd cones for future 3-ply action.

I learned the first time on my husky yarn to be patient and not push the speed to fast, to avoid breaks and uneven winding.

Made a quick free handed cat toy of a pretty rough hand spun yarn leftover. The cat liked it.

Dark brown crocheted blob shape that vaguely resembles a mouse. It has ears, whiskers, embroidered eyes and a very long thread as a tail. Its on the edge of a corten steel planter.

I finally got around to watching Jillian Eve's video about the Navajo Churro, and watching her spin the double-coated wool at the end is a LOT like my experience with spinning Oni's Tibetan Mastiff fur that I prepared on the drum carder: if you just let the fiber do its thing, the long strands bind together leaving a cloud of shorter fluff behind.

Also, later on, watching her struggle to thin out slubs that form along the way is VERY familiar too: it takes a good strong tug (or several) after un-twisting the strand to (kind of) stretch the thick bits out.

Round #2 of Tibetan Mastiff fiber prep testing!

As before, I started out combing out clumps to get the best aligned fibers possible and set aside the rest. The first photo here shows the staple length of what I'm working with. MUCH longer than husky!

Instead of using the brush to push the fiber down into the blending board (my technique with clouds of husky fluff), I dragged these combed bits down the tines to keep the fibers straight and aligned and only used the brush to push it deeper. I also worked deliberately from the bottom up, to facilitate removal. (I'm surprised I hadn't figured this out earlier!)

Then I took the discards and carded them to align the fibers (which worked surprisingly well) and then used the same drag technique to add them to the blending board.

The result: two new rolags to test spinning!

#FiberArts #HandSpun #Chiengora #TibetanMastiff

A clump of combed fur lies gently on an open hand. The fur is dark gray on the bottom, which is the denser undercoat region, and gradiates to reddish orange and gray at the top, outer tips of the fur. It has been combed into long, even strands around 8 inches or 20 centimeters long. Two new rolags of Tibetan Mastiff fur site in a clear plastic bin next to three spools of spun mastiff fur singles. The rolags are dark brown, slightly mottled with reddish and grayish regions. While the preparation between them is different, it's hard to tell one from the other by this photo.

Some preliminary carding experiments!

The long dark fibers are, as I expected, much easier to roll into rolags that hold together compared to the short husky fur I've been working with thus far. I'm curious how spinning will go!

But the bi-colored flame tips are what intrigue me most. I tried combining them on the blending board with the dark and light regions aligned, but I definitely went too thick. It did not release evenly. The clump makes a nice bouquet! But it's not how I wanted it to line up for spinning. I already have new ideas for alternate approaches!

A rollag of sorts of dark fur with brownish hints wrapped around two dowels into a long sausage like shape. It sits on a fiber blending board, with a bin of dark gray and browinsh fur off to the side. The fiber has just been combined on the blending board and then rolled up around the dowels. The same blending board in the previous photo has been loaded with fur along the top edge. This is Tibetan Mastiff fur from Oni, focusing on the parts that are stark dark brown on the inner half and bright fiery orange on the outer tips. The fiber has the dark half brushed down into the teeth of the board, leaving the fiery orange ends free at the top. Bins of source fur appear on the right. The two-tone fiber from the previous photo has been removed from the board into a bulky clump of orange tips over dark roots. It rests gently on the blending board from which it was just released.

We're getting ready for bed and I've had 13 skeins of #handspun yarn drying over the shower rod all day (yeah when I say I've been spinning I mean holy cats have I been spinning), and now our bathroom smells like a bunch of sheep who've been standing in the rain all day.

Which, and some #spinning folks may agree with me....is a smell I really like.

The idea got stuck into my head that I want the cable panel to continue in the brioche cuff of the sleeves. But in brioche you do two passes to create one row of fabric, so it's slightly complicated. I'm doing it anyway. I'm not sure how to bind off. Suggestions welcome.

Knitted sleeve on small circular bamboo knitting needles. It has a panel with two small cables and stockinette stitch around it. About half of the cuff in brioche rib is done with the cable panel continued between the ribbed fabric.

This week's :
* Finished the second sock and blocked them
* Started a new pair of short heel tab socks
* Finished the body of the hand spun cardigan with the folded hem
* Prepared for picking up the sleeves. I will make them a bit wider than the pattern's

Pair of had knit socks on blockers. The have shallow stripes in pinks and light blue paired with dark blue and solid cuff, heel and toe in dark blue. They are done with a technique called helical knitting.Sock in the making. We've been diligently harvesting Tonttu's spring shed fluff! He's gotten used to it, though clearly he's not enjoying it. 😂

Prepping for more spinning. I've been using a two-step process with the cotton carders first to de-clump and align the fibers, and then the blending board to aggregate the fiber into larger batts.

Unless they come straight off the dog to the board, like this little clump here! 😆

Finally got some selfies of the Husky Spinning Story Scarf! Trying out different wraps and loops.

I'm much happier with it today: when I'd tried it on before blocking it, it just curled around itself into shapelessness, but now it stays flatter, giving it a bit more height and letting the seed border show.

It's sad that it's spring now and I'll have to wait months before proper weather to test its warmth!

Hmmm. My stitch gauge is a little off and I've already accounted for that in choosing a larger size. But my row gauge is way off - i.e. 30 in stead of 36 rows/10cm. Does anyone know how that happens? I see some math coming.

Spinning my “Flannel Weather” rolags from Hikari Handmade, looking significantly different than I expected, but still lovely. I have many many rolags (480g worth) so this project is going to take quite some time (especially trading off with all my other projects
) but I’m super excited. #Handspun #handspinning #fiberArts

4123 stitches done. Happy with how this works out. Most fiddly part of the saddle construction is finished now.

Shoulder part of a cardigan on bamboo circular knitting needles with the bottom edge held flat by fingers of a hand. It has two braided cables running from the middle out to the shoulder caps and a ridge between the shoulder part and the beginning of the stockinette stitch back and two fronts. Finally finished and blocked my Husky Spinning Story Scarf! I thought a low scan of the whole thing would allow you to compare the yarns up close, but my phone + movement doesn't make a great combination for actually seeing detail.

I'll try to get better photos later. Sadly, I think this will be better as a conversation piece than a fashion accessory, but we'll see!

While I’m still slowly knitting up (down?) the sleeves of the jumper, to give my angry wrist a break, I have been continuing to spin up the colourful advent calendar from das-wollschaf.de.

The grey Blue Faced Leicester was so awesomely soft and squishy, but with the sari seide flecks, looked like those compressed fabric sheets used for insulation or old cleaning rags. So I plied it with another blue blend (merino, stellina) from the calendar. The other two are merino.

Little samples are great for new spinners (or newish like me) to learn what is fun to spin - sari seide isn’t my cup of tea! And good to see what base fiber would make a lovely squishy jumper - definitely fell in love with BFL even though it wasn’t as much fun as merino.

Three small skeins of colourful handspun 2ply wool sit in a narrow sliver of sun on a kitchen bench. Photos can’t bring out the sparkle of the larger blue and grey skein that is flecked with reds and yellows. The middle skein is a mix of greens from yellowish to forest, and the right skein is a colourful blend of yellows, pinks and greens.

#FiberGoals update: 5 minutes or more of #FiberArts 24/31 days, better than I expected. Made a couple of hexiflats including handspun ones. Made some progress on the washcloth for my dad (plus giving him an already completed one). The main thing is the regular fiberarts work, which was mostly spinning with the supported spindles but also some spinning on my wheel and some plying. Very little actual knitting. Still happy with progress! #knitting #spinning #handspun wandering.shop/@consumablejoy/
