In 1981 I worked for the Corps of Engineers doing many hours of clerical OT getting out plans, specs, and EIS reports on recovery efforts. I believe it was 1983 when I finally cajoled the engineers into making room for me on a daytrip where I had several hours to ramble and climb around the Spirit Lake area, taking lots of photos. On the chopper flight back out of the restricted zone, the pilot took us low around and over the crater where the dome was rebuilding itself.

Waking up in north Portland, about 1.5mi south of the airport. It didn't wake us up, but we could see it and turned on tv news to see all the locals were covering it.

I called my dad to see if he knew about or heard it (he had been following it closely; as our family used to camp/fish/hunt there). Aside, dad and I had been on a 'clandestine' flight around the developing bulge earlier when a relative duct-taped over the numbers on his small plane and flew us in low over the treetops.

Early afternoon, we were playing softball at Irvington Park and kept our eyes on it from there. Later, we returned home and watched from the airport location as we drunkenly barbecued and had a spirited game of volleyball.
