Solid is an album by American jazz guitarist Grant Green, containing performances recorded in 1964 but not released on the Blue Note label until 1979. McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones and Bob Cranshaw from Green’s previous session are joined by alto saxophonist James Spaulding and tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson.

The AllMusic review by Steve Huey stated: "Solid is a bright, hard-charging affair. There's a little modal jazz, but Solid's repertoire is chiefly complex hard bop, full of challenging twists and turns that the players burn through with enthusiasm. Green didn't tackle this kind of material — or play with this kind of group — very often, and it's a treat to hear him do so on both counts... one of Green's strongest jazz outings and a unique standout in his catalog" - Wikipedia

Grant Green - Solid

Another in the "Blue Note Albums Recorded in the 60s but not released until years later" series, this 1964 session was recorded around the same time as Matador, but came out in 1979.

Anyway, it's really, um, solid, with an especially ripping take on Ezz-Thetic on S1 (but reall, it's all good).

Green's joined by James Spaulding (alto), Joe Henderson (tenor), McCoy Tyner (piano), Bob Crenshaw (bass), and Elvin Jones (drums).

Waking up with a cough and sore throat can’t stop Jazz & Coffee Sunday. In fact it makes it more important. Some Jazz Messengers to start today, the ever present Art Blakey on drums of course. #CasSunday #Jazz #CassetteTapes #HardBop

Stanley Turrentine - That's Where It's At

1962 soul jazz/hard bop album from Turrentine, joined by Les McCann (piano), Herbie Lewis (bass), and Otis Finch (drums).

Turrentine blows soulfully, McCann sings his way through his solos (easily picked up by the mic), and Lewis & Finch provide great rhythm support.

The Horace Silver Quintet - The Tokyo Blues

Jordan was inspired, during a 1961 tour of Japan, to write the songs on this album. While they have titles that refer to his Japan experience, the music isn't terribly Japanese, and this isn't a Silver/Japanese collab.

What it is, though, is a nicely recorded (RvG) 1962 release, with Silver (piano), Blue Mitchell (trumpet), Junior Cook (Tenor), Gene Taylor (bass), and Joe Harris (drums).

Little Red's Fantasy is an album led by trumpet player Woody Shaw It was recorded in 1976 and released on the Muse label.

Reviewing a reissue, the Detroit Free Press wrote: "Shaw applied the lessons of John Coltrane to a conception rooted in hard bop. The result was an angular, saxophone-like style and a complex harmonic language spiced by dissonance and unusually wide intervals—his serpentine improvisations weave in and out of chords like a taxi through New York traffic."... - Wikipedia

Here to Stay is a studio album by American jazz trumpeter Freddie Hubbard recorded on December 27, 1962, but not released on the Blue Note label until 1976 as BN-LA 496-2. It features performances by Hubbard, Cedar Walton, Reggie Workman, Philly Joe Jones, and Wayne Shorter.

Norman Weinstein of All About Jazz commented "Another indication of Hubbard's well-seasoned taste on this session is revealed in using two of Cal Massey's most memorable compositions, "Father and Son" and "Assunta." Listen to the solos by Hubbard and Shorter on "Assunta" and ask yourself if they haven't slipped to a new phase of their growth, apart from Blakey's band at this juncture, that's more darkly introspective. I hope the album title is true of the recording's fate"... - Wikipedia

Multidirection is the second album by American jazz pianist Kenny Cox featuring performances recorded in 1969 and released on the Blue Note label.

The Allmusic review by Brandon Burke awarded the album 4 stars stating "Multidirection has as much in common with Blue Note's mildly avant-garde releases of the early '60s as it does the soul-based output typical of 1969. In this sense, one could compare it to Andrew Hill's Grass Roots or Jackie McLean's Jacknife, as soulful yet mildly dissonant hard bop is the order of the day here as well" - Wikipedia

The Cannonball Adderley Sextet in New York is a live album by jazz saxophonist Cannonball Adderley recorded at the Village Vanguard and released on the Riverside label featuring performances by Adderley with Nat Adderley, Yusef Lateef, Joe Zawinul, Sam Jones and Louis Hayes.

The AllMusic review by Richard S. Ginell :
"This was the recording debut of the Adderley Sextet, with Cannonball waxing eloquently and swingingly on alto, brother Nat charging ahead on cornet, and the versatile Yusef Lateef (who had joined the band only three weeks earlier) adding a bit of an edge on tenor, flute, and unusually for a jazz wind player, oboe on the odd, dirge-like 'Syn-Anthesia'. There is plenty of talk from Cannonball as well... This group would be Zawinul's springboard to prominence in the jazz world.."

It continues to be raw, damp and wet outside, and October on the island is fully here, albeit a few hours early.

Couldn’t have picked a more appropriate record for the evening.

Time for a few drinks and to put the fireplace on while Miles does his thing.
