Yes, @adamwiggins @geoffreylitt, this is an awesome and timely contribution to the fields of #HCI and #UXD.
It is a critical insight that there are more skill levels than: users, power users, and developers. Or there *should* be.
My highlight: "A gentle slope also supports smoother collaboration between people of different skill levels."
Designing for multiple skill levels (without requiring climbing gear) makes it easier for people to request help of those with the next-more-advanced skill.
Fashion trends in UI design bother me. A UI is a tool. Tools have usability as their number one priority. The argument "they need to update their design because it looks old" is supremely weird to me. Do people argue like that about hammers, too? "Man this screwdriver looks old, I can't stand using it".
(Yes usability changes over time as well and an old UI design might have old usability issues but I'm talking about the esthetics as an argument here)

New Blogpost is up! I write about #AI: basics, myths, and why the things people are shouting the loudest probably are wrong. Also, I propose some things we need, to prepare people for the future with this technology.

π£ Full Paper notifications are out! π£
π¬ The notifications of acceptance for full papers were sent out last Wednesday (28 May).
π This year, we received 136 submissions, and 37 papers have been conditionally accepted. That makes an acceptance rate of 27%.
A huge thank you to everyone who submitted their work!
And this is just the beginningβmany exciting tracks are still open for submissions. Do not miss the upcoming deadlines! π€© https://muc2025.mensch-und-computer.de/en/hci/
There's no need for a two-dimensional X-Y input (as in the coordinates of a touchscreen or touchpad) in a car interface. You're not going to draw anything and your hands should be on the steering wheel. Plus, hands are very inexact so you can easily miss your target - especially if you're driving. And it's difficult to build up a proper muscle memory compared to a gamepad-style menu system.

Can someone explain to me why in cars there are touchscreens or sometimes a touchpad by the gear shifter, when the obvious (I think anyway) would be a game pad type layout on the steering wheel and maybe even the menu in a HUD instead of a huge screen in the middle of the car for no good reason other than to distract the driver?
And a row or two of configurable physical buttons.
Also: I don't have a driver's license so I don't know what I'm talking about. π

En route to the #CoLIS2025 conference which, handily for me, is being held at the Technology Innovation Centre (TiC) in Glasgow (part of University of Strathclyde). π Today I am one of several mentors in the doctoral workshop -- looking forward to hearing about new frontiers in research from the next generation of students, and the future generation of scholars! π

Congratulations to #ACMFellow Brad A. Myers of Carnegie Mellon for receiving the 2025 CBI Human-Computer Interaction (#HCI) History Prize!
Myers was honored for his book, Pick, Click, Flick!: The Story of Interaction Techniques (#ACMBooks, 2024)βa landmark work exploring the evolution of how we interact with computers.
Described as βa reflective and highly impressive monument of a book,β itβs a must-read for anyone passionate about HCI.
π Well-deserved recognition!
I've started publishing my βIntroduction to human-computer interactionβ slides as CC-licensed reusable teaching material. (My #OER debut!)

I've been wanting to share these for more than a year. Doing that all at once felt insurmountable, so now I'm putting them up piece by piece over the summer. π Two out of 15 sections are up and public now, feel free to browse!
If you follow me for fediverse stuff: this is my day job. π
Aww, my oldest domain name hicom.org was 33 years old yesterday.
It was the only VAX System that Kevin Mitnick ever had a legitimate account on, he lasted less than a week.

Question for #hci folks: I'm going up for full professor and am trying to make a list of five external reviewers who:
* Are full professors in co-design/PD, interaction design, user experience design, design research, and/or children's technologies
* Have no relationship with me (co-author, advisor, etc)
* US-based (I think?)
* Can understand the unique requirements of an institution like the University of Baltimore
It's more complicated than I thought, since I have about 80 co-authors.
