In mid-2024, I bought a bunch of WD/HGST 12TB refurb HDDs for $75 each. They came from GoHardDrive and had a 5-year warranty. I even used the warranty on a drive that died a couple months later. All good.
I see now that GHD is now entirely "sold out" of these drives. However, they have plenty of relabeled MaxDigitalData 12TB drives. These are just the same refurb WD/HGST drives, but with a GoHardDrive house-brand sticker on them.
All to say that my 5-year free-replacement warranty appears to have been swapped with a "30% off" coupon on those 12TB drives (which now cost $250 each). Because, now, GHD can just refund the original $75 purchase price and say they don't have replacements anymore.
Are we measuring wellness in terabytes already? I have some gold :)
One is clicking, but I don’t know which one. Will put them in a box with other unused hardware for now. Can be useful someday.

I really think this shit needs to be:
a) Illegal internationally.
b) We need someone like the @EUCommission to come up with a plan to have our European companies as well as any company that is actually selling towards European Consumers (including smaller businesses) ramp up production.
This shit is insanely stupid right now...
Western Digital just said their '26 allocation of HDDs are already spoken for. And it's for AI. No surprise there. And WD said they've already taken huge orders for all the way out until '28. This AI BS has got to stop!

@happyborg @dalai @jwildeboer most of these providers claim that they can recoup the cost with new purchases and shrinking costs for storage over time, which makes this truly a #PyramidScheme.
OFC they also throtthe users and don't expect everyone to max out their purchased storage quota instantly.
But I'm not just comparing against short-term filehosters but also in terms of #backups consider years, if not decades of uptime to be necessary to be useful.
Also mind you this ain't like #TeamViewer where the cost of infrastructure is negligible (just some "Rendrevous-Server" to exchange status info, IP addresses and facilitate "Hole Pubching" through #NAT & #Firewall which in theory doesn't reuire mich compute and bandwith to function.
We're talking Gigabytes if not Terabytes per User in storage and traffic.
And since this system isn't like some #ColdStorage like a #tape, this needs to be #HDDs that constantly spin and draw power.
