As we left the hospital the heavens opened so we decided to go home.
The current plan is to go out to our allotment after we've had a bite to eat.
Sacha felt that the physio class might be helpful - although they are doing some work on balance - which for her will be a major endeavour!

While we were there - I went to the hospital reception to get some more NHS hearing aid batteries and was given a third degree on how many I had in stock and where I normally get them from. It was all very odd, and slightly upsetting.

Phew! Back in my regular hearing aids and life is good.

I did luck out with the loaners that they gave me. High end and brand new, they were probably the best that I could hope for in the interim while mine were being fixed. But they sounded tinny to me, they didn't really fit my ears, and the tinnitus was much worse.

When I picked mine up and put them in today, I could feel my whole body relax!

Even moderate hearing loss is very odd.
It's not until I stick my hearing aids in that I realise how much I'm missing out on - mostly birdsong, but also little household noises.
My hearing aids sometimes feel like a lot of bother, almost a cruel imposition, but the benefits are immense.

I kinda hit the hearing aid lottery today! My right HA died on Monday. Took it in to my audiologist today to ship off to get fixed. Their office will supply loaners when this happens, and today she said "we just received a brand new model of hearing aids this week. Would you take them as loaners and write a review for us?"

Why yes, I will take these brand new hearing aids out for a test drive, thank you very much!

@Knitronomicon @Thebratdragon Some local NHS areas have outsourced their basic Audiology testing (& hearing aid provision) to private contractors - for example Specsavers & Boots.

The testing should be the same from NHS or private.

If you do end up going to a private provider on an NHS referral make sure that they don't try to upsell private hearing aids. They are not meant to do this, but frequent comments from around the country show it's a common tactic.

Basic NHS aids (ussually Oticon Engage devices) are fine for most people - and the batteries, spares & servicing are all free from the NHS unlike the private (expensive) devices.

Private hearing aids are often less noticable as they can be 'in the ear' devices and they can have more functions which some people like, but others find confusing.

I've been happily using NHS aids for a lot of years and have no issues with them.

(Note that with Heaing Aids you are entitled to a Disabled Persons Railcard)

I have been suffering from itchy ears when my hearing aids are in place.
I was recommended a product called Eargene.
I doubt it's any more effective than olive oil, but it smells divine!

I've given up trying get the ASHA function on my phone to play nicely with my hearing aids.
So, I've bought a tiny device that connects my hearing aids to my phone by Bluetooth - and it's amazing. It also works as a directional microphone to supplement my hearing aids.
Not cheap, but it looks like a game changer for me.

Experimented with measuring frequency response of some generic Over The Counter (OTC) hearing aids. Product had three programs with subtle differences between them and wanted to select best response curve for needy family member. Used Digilent AD3, ext breadboard, a few parts from ADALP-2000 parts kit, and some blue tape to make crude response curve measurements. Now know that Program 1 is best for this user. I'm not very good at remembering to use my hearing aids when we're at home.
But, it is astonishing how much bird song I'm missing out on.
Without them, it's just the distant rumble of the motorway, but with them the birds predominant, and the motorway is a bit less noticeable.
