Quickly, they analyzed the blood from #Florida using their custom software & found that 9 cases were genetically linked to the same pain clinic, where it was later discovered that a doctor was improperly reusing injection vials. By March, ofcls in FL had restricted the doctor's #medical license to limit the spread of the #virus & packaged new patient samples to send to the #CDC for testing…

De Tiber bij het eiland in Rome

Amsterdam ligt aan de Amstel, Antwerpen aan de Schelde en Rome aan de Tiber. Dat was destijds, vóór de kanalisering van 1870, een wispelturige rivier die vaak buiten haar oevers trad. Helaas stonden de Romeinse graanpakhuizen stroomafwaarts, tussen de heuvel Aventijn en de rivier. Als ze onder water kwamen staan, was de ellende niet te overzien. De Historia Augusta geeft een beschrijving:

[Keizer] Marcus Aurelius gaf zich geheel en al over aan de filosofie en won de genegenheid van de burgerij. Maar de overstroming van de Tiber, de ergste in zijn tijd, verstoorde dat geluk. Ze trof veel gebouwen in de stad, doodde talloze dieren en veroorzaakte een zeer ernstige hongersnood. Maar Marcus en [zijn medekeizer] Lucius Verus verlichtten de nood door hun zorgzaamheid en aanwezigheid.noot Historia Augusta, Marcus Aurelius 8.2-5.

Een tekst over de overstroming van een zijrivier van de Tiber bevat beeldende details die de gevolgen van watersnood illustreren. De auteur, Plinius de Jongere, bekleedde op het moment dat hij onderstaande woorden schreef, een hoge bestuurlijke functie, die hem verantwoordelijk maakte voor de bedding en oevers van de Tiber. Hij wist dus waarover hij het had. Ook betoont zich een auteur die iets niet simpel zegt als het ingewikkeld kan, want de beeldspraak in de eerste regel is een complexe manier om te zeggen dat er villa’s stonden in de uiterwaarden:

De Anio, elegantste van alle stromen, en daarom door de aanliggende landhuizen als het ware uitgenodigd en vastgehouden, heeft een groot deel de bossen waardoor hij wordt beschaduwd, geveld en meegesleurd. Heuvels heeft hij ondergraven en op veel plaatsen raakte hij versperd door aardverschuivingen, zodat hij, op zoek naar de bedding die hij was kwijtgeraakt, gebouwen heeft omvergeworpen en over de bouwvallen stortend is voortgeraasd.
Mensen die op hoger gelegen plaatsen door dat noodweer werden overvallen, zagen op de ene plek meubilair van rijken en massief huisraad, op een andere landbouwwerktuigen, hier weer ossen, ploegen met de voerman erbij, elders losgeraakte en onbeheerde kuddes en daartussendoor boomstronken of balken van woonhuizen lukraak her en der ronddrijven.
Zelfs streken die boven het bereik van de rivier lagen, bleven voor het onheil niet gespaard, want in plaats van de rivier had men daar continue stortregens en wervelstormen die uit de wolken neersloegen. Muren waarmee kostbare akkers omgeven waren, werden neergehaald, grafmonumenten ontwricht en zelfs tegen de grond gesmakt. Veel mensen zijn bij zulke rampzalige voorvallen verminkt, bedolven of verpletterd en behalve veel schade was er ook veel rouw.noot Plinius de Jongere, Brief 8.17.3-5; vert. Peters.

De Anio was, zoals gezegd, een zijstroom van de Tiber. De gevolgen van een Tiberoverstroming waren nog dramatischer. De fundamenten van de woonkazernes waren vaak slecht en konden worden los gespoeld, zodat het huis instortte. Tegelijk drong het rivierwater de riolering binnen en stroomde het vuil terug naar de stad. Watersnood ging daardoor gepaard met epidemieën. Cholera, dysenterie, hepatitis, tuberculose, lepra en tyfus waren vertrouwde verschijnselen in Rome.

Ter hoogte van het stadscentrum was een doorwaadbare plaats, waar ook een eiland lag. De Romeinen dachten dat het er niet altijd was geweest en de Romeinse geschiedschrijver Titus Livius vertelt een aardig verhaal over het ontstaan. Ooit, kort voor het jaar 500 v.Chr., was koning Tarquinius Superbus verdreven en de Romeinse republiek ontstaan. De verdreven vorst beraamde daarop een complot om terug te keren, maar de Romeinse politicus Lucius Junius Brutus ontdekte dit op tijd.

Daarop werden de goederen van Tarquinius ter plundering aan het lagere volk vrijgegeven: had het volk zich eenmaal vergrepen aan die koninklijke buit, dan kon het alle hoop laten varen ooit nog vrede met de Tarquinii te sluiten. Het land van de Tarquinii, dat lag tussen de stad en de Tiber, werd gewijd aan Mars en was sindsdien bekend als het Marsveld.
Men zegt dat daar toen juist graan op de velden stond, rijp voor de oogst. Omdat het om godsdienstige redenen niet raadzaam was dit gewas voor consumptie te gebruiken, werd een grote groep mannen gelijktijdig ingezet om het met halm en al af te snijden, in manden te doen en zo in de Tiber te gooien. De rivier stond heel laag, zoals meestal middenin de zomer, en dus bleven er bergen koren steken in het ondiepe water en in de modder vastzitten. Daardoor ontstond langzamerhand een eiland. Later zijn daar vermoedelijk dammen aan toegevoegd en is er mensenwerk verricht om het terrein zo hoog te maken als het nu is en sterk genoeg om tempels en zuilengangen te dragen.noot Livius, Geschiedenis sinds de stichting van de stad 2.5.1-4; vert. Op de plaats op het eiland waar nu de S. Bartolomeo staat, was in de Oudheid de tempel van Asklepios, de van oorsprong Griekse god waaronder de gezondheidszorg ressorteerde. Hij werd afgebeeld met een slang. Livius vertelt over de introductie van zijn cultus in Rome op 1 januari 291 v.Chr.:

Omdat de staat te lijden had van een epidemie, werden afgezanten gezonden om het beeld van Asklepios van Epidauros naar Rome te brengen. Ze brachten een slang mee, die bij hen aan boord was gegaan en waarin de godheid zonder twijfel zelf aanwezig was. De slang begaf zich van het schip naar het Tibereiland en op die plaats werd een tempel voor Asklepios opgericht.noot Livius, Periochae 11; vert. Katwijk-Knapp.

Zieken konden op dit eiland eenvoudig in quarantaine worden gehouden en daarom waren hier ook in de Middeleeuwen en daarna ziekenhuizen. Het huidige hospitaal der Fatebenefratelli kan met enig recht beweren het oudste ter wereld te zijn.
