Western box turtles duking it out in my irrigation pond. They're usually super skittish, but they were so engrossed in their encounter that they didn't notice me.

Any #herpetologist out there familiar with these critters? Is this courtship or territorial behavior? There are at least five of them in the pond at the moment. It's almost comical watching them go at it. Toward the end, one lands a pretty good blow and knocks the other backward. I have more video, but shortened it for uploading.

One last #LizardReport before I leave for the season. I hadn't seen Bill in a couple days but this morning he was up on the porch. He even came in the house a couple times. I normally let them come in and wander around when the door is open, but I had to make sure to shoo him out because I don't want him to get stuck when I leave.

He and my little porch buddy got into this strange behavior multiple times this morning and I managed to catch it once on video. The little one squirms under Bill's belly. Any #herpetologist that can explain this behavior? Given the season, I'm guessing it's some kind of courtship. I'm also guessing that "little guy" who lives under the chair on the porch might actually be "little gal." She's looking kind of chubby. I assumed it was just fat from all the worms I've been feeding her but now I'm wondering if she's about to lay eggs.

Bill The Lizard is over on the neighbor's wall, but has some weird crustiness around his nostrils. Any #herpetologist know what's going on here?

Well, guess what I happened to spy out my front door tonight, lying on the warm concrete that had #baked in the #sun all afternoon?

And he/she brought a #friend this time!

If there are any #herpetologists out there, I'd be curious if this behaviour means anything, or if they're just sharing heat or something. The colouring and size differ between them, so is this a male and a female?

A pair of snakes - red-sided garter snakes - are curled up together on a concrete walk that has baked in the sun all afternoon. The two tails stick out next to each other, and the two heads are also close together.

Find the #lizard game, since the last one was popular. This should be fairly easy. Please don't give away the answer! Inspired by Dr. Earyn McGee who goes by afro_herper on Twitter, but isn't on here.

The animal's whole body is visible, not hidden. This was at Carrizo Plain National Monument a week ago.

If you're a #herpetologist and find it, can you maybe ID it? I'll post a close up pic once the location is revealed.

Mr Photogenic. I figure if we are supporting higher mammals (quendas) and frogs in the #garden we are doing something right. This guy was completely fine with my presence.

Looking at Reptiles and Frogs of the Perth Region I think it is probably a Western green tree frog Litoria moorei (also museum.wa.gov.au/explore/frogw) also known as the motorbike frog for its call. But you know, not a #herpetologist :)

A marvel of the rainforest treetops; the Green Thornytail Iguana (Uracentron azureum). This species is endemic to part of the Guiana shield in the upper part of the Amazon, Suriname and French Guiana. They are rarely seen as they live mainly high up the trees. It will be featured in the upcoming book: The Reptiles of the Guianas (Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana)

Im not a #herpetologist nor do I play one on tv. I find these creatures to be delightful though. These were all species seen in #Jamaica in the last week or so. I THINK they are different kinds of #anoles but I am not sure. Any insight #herpetology friends?

African rock python is a large, non-venomous snake native to sub-Saharan Africa. It is one of the six largest snake species in the world and is widely feared, though it very rarely kills humans.

Tip of the Day:

If you keep pet snakes this is a super simple, take your *shed snake skin and when you visit friends place the shed in an inconspicuous place. Behind the toilet or in a kitchen cabinet were always my favorites, but don't be afraid to branch out. If you have access to a bedroom then under a blanket or pillow would be an excellent place. Hilarity will ensue!

Of course you won't be able to watch the reactions first hand, but let your imagination fill in the blanks.

*If you do not have access to shed you may have to just make friends with a herpetologist at the zoo or your local weed store.

Ok, let me try this post as an #introduction here on Mastodon. Hi everyone, I am Gabriel Ugueto and I am a professional #artist who creates #paleoart and #sciart who specializes in illustrating both #extinct and #extant tetrapods. Here are a few recent examples of my work.
I am also a #herpetologist so I probably will be sharing a lot of stuff here about #amphibians #reptiles, and yes the latter includes #birds 😋
Have a bit of patience with me while I figure Mastodon out

Warning to anyone that's a #herpetologist, amateur or professional, which cares for Desert-type #reptiles!

The MVB for our Bearded Dragon (Pogona vitticeps) died recently and after unscrewing it in preparation for the replacement, we discovered this scorch mark!

By the looks of it, there was actual ignition (i.e. fire) of the timber itself but thankfully, it didn't spread. We were very lucky in this case!

I'm not sure if aluminium foil would help (maybe someone can chime in?) but please, always check the alignment of your bulbs and try to use non-flammable materials!

For those that don't know, a MVB is a Mercury Vapour Bulb. Without going into great detail, you can find these in gymnasiums and the like. They are good for simulating the sun and output great amounts of UVA/UVB which Beardies and other similar, sun-loving reptiles require to metabolise calcium.

Without UVA/UVB, they develop bone disorders such as rickets, for one.
