Some great news. My book Naming Gotham won the 2024 NYC Big Book Award for Regional Nonfiction (and was a Distinguished Favorite for US History). Check it out to learn more about corrupt NYC mayors of yore. @history

Henry Melvill, Anglican priest, reflects on Simon of Cyrene, and abolition of slavery in British colonies. It’s just that Britain expended millions to ransom captives. Slavery is hostile to the spirit of the Gospel.

Others today say abolition took too many risks and costs.

How can you take risks and costs to end abuses to human dignity, which are hostile to the spirit of the Gospel?

"And our country did gloriously when she threw down her millions as a ransom, resolving to extinguish slavery in her colonies, but to maintain, at the same time, good faith and justice. We speak of all this as noble and excellent, because we believe it to have been our duty as Christians to set ourselves against slavery as hostile to the spirit of the Gospel, and to attempt this duty at all costs, and, what is more, all risks."

San Miguel Mission Chapel in Socorro is considered the oldest church still in use in the United States. Built between 1615 – 1626, Nuestra Señora de Perpetuo has walls that are 5 feet thick, with massive, carved vigas. The mission was temporarily abandoned during the Pueblo Revolt, but it wasn't completely destroyed. The church was restored after the Spanish returned in 1692.

Colonel Sumner est. Fort Union north of the Santa Fe Trail in July, 1851.

Why?

He viewed Santa Fe as “morally degrading.” Too many bars/brothels. He made soldiers build the fort & farm to save money. Conflict w/Comanche, Ute & Apache on the trail jeopardized supply lines.

The Franciscans, with the help of the villagers, built a modest #church in #Socorro in 1598, Nuestra Señora de Perpetuo, completed between 1615 – 1626. That is the church that exists today. The walls are approximately 5 feet wide, with huge, carved vigas.

Ancestral Pueblo people carved rooms, known as cavates, into the tuff cliffs of the Pajarito Plateau. Bandelier National Monument and Puye Cliff Dwellings are known for them, but they can be seen throughout the Jemez. I saw these next to the road between Bandelier and White Rock.

The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ceded the territory that became New Mexico to the U.S. The rapid population growth overwhelmed Doña Ana. The U.S. Army designated a site for a new town 6 miles south, establishing the first 84 blocks of Las Cruces, each containing four lots. 120 men gathered to draw lots from a hat to determine who got which site. The Mesquite Historic District encompasses the initial allotment. #NewMexico #travel #roadtrip #history #historygeek
