KI-ldearbejde

Early on in my timeline
I had reason to spend time in Fort Collins, Boulder and Denver,

grading & learning about the world thru Asia's lens. I loved the campus in

Robert South was an Anglican writer and preacher. Here he talks about keeping the peace. He says that one who is oppressing widows, and is grinding the face of the poor, is no less a disturber of the peace than someone who forages the country with an army.

Some today may be more upset that talking about the poor is merely disturbing the peace.

How can you keep the peace?

"And he is no less a disturber of the peace, and a breaker of this law [to live peaceably], who oppresses the widow, and grinds the face of the fatherless and the poor, than he who forages a country with an army."

@edenoi This. We had a more "traditional" bombing campaign before the nuclear weaponry. We dropped about 2,000 tons of incendiary bombs on Tokyo over 2 days and created the single worst firestorm in history. Yes, worse than Dresden. #HistoryTeacher

Since it is Black History Month, I thought I would share this blog post I wrote about Jane Matilda Bolin--the first Black woman to serve as a judge in the United States. Her story is pretty inspiring. And, New York City should rename the Queens-Midtown Tunnel to honor her! @histodons historyinthemargins.com/2023/0

@Jorsh Just so. Look, either they were “enemy combatants,” aka another country, which means they don’t get statues because how many statues do we have to Kaiser Wilhelm or Hitler? … OR … they were traitors to the United States, which means they don’t get statues - see Ethel and Julius Rosenberg. It’s one of those issues that for once isn’t complicated. This doesn’t mean you can’t admire their abilities as tacticians or leaders, but it does mean they are not statue-worthy. #HistoryTeacher

Exactly one year ago today, I unboxed the first copies of Naming Gotham. I got to spend a year sharing on podcasts, giving public lectures, & doing news interviews with PBS, Daily News, Hellgate (+ so many more). What an adventure! Thank you all for the support.

P.S. Books make great presents! @histodons

montage of photos: 1) the box with my book Naming Gotham in it, 2) the book itself, and 3) a (bad) selfie of me holding the book. The book cover has photos of Peter Cooper, Henry Bruckner, Shirley Chisholm, and Jackie Robinson, as well as a shot of Bryant Park, and a cityscape looking south from Hell's Kitchen

Found this gem tucked into my work notebook. The teen has apparently been listening to some of my book talks for Naming Gotham

drawing of a Venn diagram labeled "shit in New York." Most of the Venn diagram is designated "shit built by Robert Moses. A small wedge is labeled shit NOT built by Robert Moses.

Then the text "Yeah This guy was important. Nobody likes him though. So let's take this diagram and move on."

One of the best things about Naming Gotham has been the opportunities it created for me to reconnect with old friends and former students. @histodons
